HPT bios update.

I have never been able to use system restore. I looked into it ages ago and apparently it's because of the HPT bios. I know I can update it and get SR back. How do I do it and where do I get it?
Thanks guys.

what mobo?...if its integrated hpt u need to flash ur bios that includes a new hpt bios. if the newest bios doesnt have the newest hpt bios u can always get a modded bios that would include the newest hpt bios. for the 372 i think 2.34 in the newest

I have not been aware of a HPT bios doig that and have had several board with onboard HPT controllers and used all kinds of different bios with them, I even had one with an onboard and a rocketraid PCI card at the same time. Where did you hear this??? And yes, if it is onboard you need to flash for the board unless you know how to swap the component out yourself.

I can't remember the details, it's from my pre S-M days, it may have come from Icrontic but as I remember there is some conflict with system restore and the HPT bios. I didn't do anthing about it but got the impression I could update just the HPT. I don't actually know if this is right? If I updated the bios would this update the HPT at the same time?

If it is an onboard controller it is the only way to upgrade the HPT bios.

If you want more info switch channels and yell fer that Tex feller. If anyone has heard of this problem he would be aware of it.

Like Mtgoat said, if your Highpoint controller is onboard, then you need to mod a KX7 bios file with the latest HPT bios, if there isn't one already available. You then simply flash you motherboard BIOS as normal.

If you are using a PCI add-on card, (which houses the highpoint controller) then you can (in fact that's the only way to do it) flash the Highpoint BIOS individually, through the use of a dedicated flashing utility.

I presume though, your controller is onboard. So... email me with what KX7 bios version you want to use and I'll mod it with the latest highpoint bios for ya.

    Cheers

p.s (To be honest though, if a problem like the one you are describing did actually exist, as I actually seem to remember it did, the KX7 being a relatively modern board, should have come with one of the latest Highpoint BIOS versions already flashed. So you need to just check what version it is. 2.34 is the latest for that controller chip. I imagine it will probably be 2.32 or something like that. Which anything even close to that, should be rid of bugs like the one you described)

Well, in that case, I guess you must not have 2.32 flashed, so... Bothered mate, drop me an email, and I'll sort you out with a nice new, system restore compatible BIOS.

    Thanks for the info FatCat.

Another thing you can do if you don't want to update your BIOS and drivers is to search for a file named hptpro.sys and rename it. The file doesn't seem to do much, but it does cause System Restore to not work.

all u have to do is download the newest KX7-333R bios from abit...

    Version: CN Released Date: 2003-09-15

Yeah... but he might want a customized EPA logo or something, you know like a short-media one. ;)

Bah! I just like modding BIOS's okay. Christ, I hardly ever get to do it anymore. I find it restfull.;D

Thanks for the offer Spinner but, I tried to update the bios with a floppy but it wouldn't have it (dodgy floppys from PC world)
I did it via Abits Flash menu (one click windows bios updater) and it's done the biz. According to the startup screen I now have a new bios. I tried system restore, create restore point, a box pops up saying windows cannot create a restore point. This is what it used to do before.
    Any ideas guys?

If windows has been on there a while the resre files are kaput and you should just do a "repair install". 30 minutes now will save you hours later and you can update the drivers during the install with the F6 thinggy.

When you are installing XP there is a point in the beginning where it says to press "F6" to install RAID or storage controller drivers. It is real easy. You will need the drivers on a floppy\.

So you're now running the latest mobo BIOS, which contains the latest highpoint BIOS 2.34, correct? and you've got highpoint drivers to match your highpoint BIOS verison, correct? and if so and it still didn't work, you've now performed a repair install correct?

If yes to all of the above.... does system restore now work?:p

Wonderful. I got the 2.34 drivers from S-M downloads and installed them and Hey Presto, I have system restore back. I must admit I didn't know you had to have drivers for this bios.
Thanks everyone. S-M does it again.
