Spyware.AdvancedKeylogger on my shell32.dll - please help!
Hello,
I have been using Ad-aware and Spybot for quite a while now, and they have kept me spyware free... untill now that is.
During my last scan with ad-aware 16 threats called Spyware.AdvancedKeylogger where detected. I thought I could simply remove them like I always do, but when I want to delete the selection the program just freezes. After scanning a second time, it was obvious that no spyware was deleted.
They are all seem to infect 1 file: windows/system/shell32.dll which is bad news and the threat as a TAC rating of 10, which is even more bad news!
I scanned with Spybot, but no threats were detected. I scanned with AVG and no virusses where detected. I scanned with ad-aware again and this time I do get virus alerts from AVG (apparently in my windows/temp folder). Deleting them manually didn't succeed.
I would very much appreciate it if someone could help me out!

Hi!
I have the excact same problem as you!
About 16-18 threats of "Spyware.AdvancedKeyLogger", and my Ad-Aware is not able to delete this. Instead it just freezes, just like you've experienced.
I sincrely hope someone can help us with this annoying and possible "dangerous" threat on our PC's....
RAI
Start your own thread and someone will help out soon. Download HJT, if you havn't already and post a log.
Rascal: I'm looking at your log now...will be back in a few mins
Please Update the definitions for Ad-Aware, SpyBot and AVG. Do NOT scan yet.
--
Go into Safe Mode - explained here
--
Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked' - Close ALL open Browsers first
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F2A4407B-FFBC-4A1F-A18A-0F68C3E0FC9E} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BAXIEO.DLL (file missing)
--
Now scan with Ad-Aware, SpyBot and AVG.
--
Reboot back into Normal Mode and let me know of any changes
First of all, thank you for helping me out!
I have followed your instructions, but the problem remains exactly the same. AVG nor Spybot finds any threats. Ad-aware finds 16 such keyloggers. Moreover, during scanning with ad-aware AVG suddenly does detect viruses. I will list them below, maybe it can help solve the problem:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\AAWTMP\C297751\269BAA\BLACKBOX.CLASS
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\AAWTMP\C297751\269BAA\VERIFIERBUG.CLASS
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\AAWTMP\C297751\269BAA\BEYOND.CLASS
AVG is unable to heal, delete or move them to the virusvault. In my temp-folder there is also a file named 'ZLT01f4e.TMP' which I can't seem to remove. I will post my log below.
Merry Christmas to you all!

I stumbled into this forum by google because I was looking for a solution for this problem. I am experiencing exactly the same thing as you are. For me this problem started after I downloaded a missing plugin : Java runtime environment 1.5.0 (Sun). After this I updated the ad-aware definitions and did a full system scan, the results were the same as you described. So I think it must be either one of these two actions, or the combination of these two, which cause this problem.
I am using: - Win98SE
- FireFox 1.5
- Ad Aware
- Spybot
- eTrust pestpatrol
- Norman Virus Scan
- ZoneAlarm
Personally I think it is a bug of some kind, because no other (than AdAware) spyware scanner finds this problem. And AdAware is not able to pin point it to a specific keylogger-program. It "just" recognises a pattern resembling a keylogger.
I hope this Info and opinion is/was usefull, Merry X-mass.
Koen
(Sorry for any possible language-, etiquette- mistakes, I am not a native speaker and a newbe to the forum stuff)
I also think there is a bug in Ad-Aware which is causing it to find these "Keyloggers". Ad-Aware is normally good at removing items it finds.
Koen, it seems you are right about the fact it has something to do with that Java runtime environment, as you can see by the log from BitDefender listed below. Though it seems to me that it isn't just some harmless bug ad-aware encounters. Of course, I will leave judgment to the experts...
I wish you all a happy and spyware-free New Year!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:
Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.
Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.
Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables.
Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.
Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster 3.4
Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.
Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.
Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.
Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.
Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.
Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.
Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

The second entry you mention: it apparently has something to do with my online banking account. If I delete/fix it with HJT, will it still work properly?
Thank you for the pointers. As I might have mentioned before I already apply most of them, so let's hope this was a one time mishap.
The second, you don't have to remove since its your online banking account. Even, if you did remove that entry nothing would have happened
I'm glad everything is back to normal. Can I mark this resolved?
