edited January 2006 in Science & Tech
ok so i am building two more computers for F@H. i just realized that i wont have an internet connection unless i run a 100ft cable down to the router in my dads computer room. my main rig has wireless connection but i didnt want to get 2 more wireless cards for my new rigs b/c i simply dont have the money to do so. is there any way that i could network my new rigs to my main rig and have internet on the new rigs? thanks in advance

Yes, you can do that. You simply have:

    A) 4 wired NICs (1 for each new PC and 2 for your main rig to plug them into)
4 crossover cables and plug them in

    OR

    B) 3 wired NICs + 1 switch. 2 for each new PC and 1 for main rig. All 3 plug into switch.
    3 patch cables

Then you can use Internet Connection Sharing Wizard in Network Properties to "share" your internet in the Wireless NIC's properties. I assume the new PCs won't be used for heavy network traffic so you shouldn't be affected having all 3 sharing wireless.

Are you running a switch or connecting two NICS directly, and which kind of network cable are you using? It sounds like you've used a patch cable between the two computers when you need to have a crossover cable.

ok so i remember that i had to check a box to share internet connection. i checked it and the it asked me which internet i wanted to share. i said the wireless. then i clicked ok and a box came up that said, an error has occured while trying to enable THe Internet Sharing, It can not connect due to an IP address confliction. it is trying to use such and such an IP adress. make sure that no other computer is using this.

Do you know what addressing scheme your LAN is? (192.168.x.x) I believe ICS uses 192.168.0.1-255. If your LAN uses that there is a way to change that so it will work.

i can figure that out. i know where to find it. how do i change it.

Inside your router configuration there should be an option to change the LAN IP. If it's 192.168.0.0 change it to 192.168.1.0 or something because there's not a way to change Window's ICS IPs that I know of.

Once you change it on the router just refresh the IPs of the computers connected to the router and retry the ICS.

Yes it needs to be changed (to something like 192.168.1.1). Windows uses the IP range for ICS and I don't think you can change that. Once changed ICS shouldn't give you the error anymore. What brand/model is the router?

its a d-link. i got everything working now. and i changed the IP address for the LAN as well. i have internet to my folding rig and im going to get my folding rig 2 set up and have 3 folding instead of just one.
