Book - Hacking Exposed

I work at a library so I have been reading this book (the first edition). I was thinking about buying it so I have been looking on amazon and they have the 'fourth edition'. I was wondering if anyone knew how this differed from the first edition. I would just buy the 4th edition but I am afraid they will start from where they left off with advanced techniques. I definatly want to start from the beginners stage. What do you all think, first or fourth edition?

I think that any published book about hacking is going to be class-A rubbish. More often than not, it'll probably cover already-patched security exploits (If it even covers those), and won't go into much depth on programming your own tools or the environments in which a "Real" hacker would be working.

Hacking is one of the few remaining tasks on a machine that won't be publicized with the depth it requires to explain the task. Hacking exposed books are probably like "Get rich quick" books...BS.

Normally when its an edition like that, its not really an edition, more of an update, i.e. terms changed to meet today, rather than refering to old things all the time. Think of it as firmware, sort of, as they also fix things like mis-information or spelling mistakes.

Interesting, and a reliable source of accurate information are two entirely different characteristics. Thank you, Slick.

Nope, you guys are dead wrong. Hacking Exposed, despite it's ridiculously commercial title, is a very excellent source of common and uncommon exploits and preventative measures for anyone who is going to be using real servers on the real internet. It is a highly accurate and very timely book, Thrax. Maybe you should actually read something before debunking it as "Class A Rubbish" (You can't judge a book by it's cover and all that.....) You sure think you're the authority on everything sometimes

Slick, I highly recommend it, and I would definitely recommend the latest edition. I have the 3rd edition and it has a chapter on Windows 2000 that is pretty comprehensive, but it is still NT4-Centric, so I'm sure the 4th edition will have much more timely information.

We have the freedom of press. Not allowing us to print such information would be highly unconstitutional.

The gov has to let it be published. You should see some of the books you can get. You can still get books on how to make explosives, guns, how to kill people and get away with it, etc etc. The info is out there.

we dont have freedom of speech..censorship laws my friend...censorship laws.

    //edit
and i admit if i am wrong...i personally did not read the book...but if prime has read it and says its class a goodness...then ill go with his oppinion..the main reason why i agreed with thrax is because that censorship laws do exist and they do prevent a lot of books from coming out...im sure of it

I admit my wrong -shrugs- So happens that <i>every</i> other book like this ever published was script-kiddie crap. The title doesn't help it along either. I just went on that.

You all have freedom of press unless of course martial law or habeas corpus are imposed. But the gonvernment will only act on treason if it is committed. And its freedom of speech. As long as not offensive to others. dont forget that part

If something that is published threatens national security, you can bet it will go down under "classified", or someone will work to prevent mainstream contamination. You'll have an easier time claiming Freedom of press if you're shouting opinions opposed to making some form of biological weapon.

We do have the freedom the press and speech, but if the government or an industry with power wants and can pull an article, they will.

this is where you can find those books on explosives, guns and how to kill people guides. Of course they are only meant for educational value not as a guide :ninja:

Let's not get on the freedom of speech topic too much or I'll change ALL of your credit ratings. Each and every one of you.

    :eek2:

    That's Hacking Exposed.

On the subject at hand I would think that a book like that "may" be a good starting point and from there you can ask more intelligent questions.
