*Ware that I just can't get rid of

Hey folks,

I have spent the good part of today cleaning a computer and have managed to delete several thousand viruses and other no gooders.

I still however have a very annoying *ware of some description. Everynow and again a window will pop up in IE and whenever I enter the word SPYWARE inot the google Toolbar another "sponsored link" appears at the top of the search list, it is sort of inserted after the page has been displayed, behaviour I have never seen before.

I ran SB S&D, AdAware SE, and purchased Spyware Doctor, have alos run panda antivirus, and I have norton AV running, no matter what I do I can't seem to find this *ware.

Anywhere here is my log:

    Can you please do the following.

    Please go to Jotti's and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

    c:\windows\system32\msevnt.exe

    ===============

    Scan with HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    Search for...

    ALCXMNTR.EXE

    ...using "Start | Search...".

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    Thank you.

    I can not find the msevnt anywhere in teh system32 directory, I have looked with hidden and system files enabled. It is not their.

    I found many coppies of the file you mentioned and cleaned up as you mentioned. I am still getting adverts for things like winantispyware poppping up, also the insertion at the top of the google page is still happening.

    Here is my latest log:

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Scan with HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msevnt] c:\windows\system32\msevnt.exe /nocomm

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log. Please post the information back in this thread.
    If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    Hi, here is the output of the script.

    If it helps at all the types of popups I have been seeing are winantispyware and winfixer ads. And it inserts a "sponsored link" at the top of every google search for the word spyware, that usually points to winantispyware or nuker.com.

    Thanks.

    Download the Pocket KillBox
    Unzip the file to your desktop.
    Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of the below file in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you the file.

    c:\windows\system32\apbxtnhj.exe

    Reboot afterwards if the file is successfully deleted.

    If the file is not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot.

    ==

    Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click the file to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

    ==

    Reboot, rescan with silent runners and post the log please. Let me know if the problem persists.

    It would appear that the problem has now gone!

    Thank you VERY much.

    It is "interesting" that the "commerical" scanners were unable to detect the problem. Surely the file you found was not so special that it could not be detected by any of these commercial scanners?

    Again - THANK YOU!

    As requested I am posting my silent runners log here:

    It would appear that the problem has now gone!

    Thank you VERY much.

    It is "interesting" that the "commerical" scanners were unable to detect the problem. Surely the file you found was not so special that it could not be detected by any of these commercial scanners?

    It would appear so :). Those scanners are only as good as their database. Silent Runners digs a little deeper.

    That log is now clean :). Happy surfing again.
