Question on which of my hijackthis scans...

edited December 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I have a spyware or virus that is causing the browser desktop. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks

    Hi, Welcome to Short-Media :)

    Step 1
Please move HJT from your Desktop to its own folder on your C: so backups can be created. Do this before continuing.

    Step 2
Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and look for the following

    Viewpoint Toolbar

    If found, please uninstall.

    Step 3
Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked' - Close ALL open Browsers first

    O2 - BHO: ZIBho Class - {029CA12C-89C1-46a7-A3C7-82F2F98635CB} - C:\Program Files\Kontiki\bin\bh309190.dll (file missing)

    Thansk for the help.

I looked for the spoolsrv32 file and I found it but it would not let me delete it. Also, I forgot to mention, my norton anti-virus said it deteced a trojan by the file name C:/WINDOWS/Web/desktop.html. I tried to delete the file, but it also would not let me.

    Thanks again

You may want to print these instructions or save them since you'll have no internet connection once your in Safe Mode
    --

Go into Safe Mode - explained here
    --

Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked' - Close ALL open Browsers first

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Main\LOCALS~1\Temp\20051226205445_mcin fo.exe /insfin
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

    --

    Find and Delete the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe << this file
    --

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.'

    Empty the Recycle Bin.
    --

    Reboot back into Normal Mode
    --

Go here and in the box provided, paste the following. Then press SUBMIT

    C:/WINDOWS/Web/desktop.html

The file will be scanned by various Anti-Virus scanners. Please post the results here along with a new HJT log :)

This is the result I received for the Jotti scan...

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

    Your log is clean.

Let me know if that message comes back from Norton :)
  • edited December 2005
The desktop background is still a browser. And I did receive a message from Norton saying the virus is the C:/WINDOWS/Web/desktop.html.

I don't think it is gone.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Download Ad-Aware SE and SpyBot from here, if you havn't already. Update them both and then EXIT.
    --

    Go into Safe Mode
    --

Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked' - Close ALL open Browsers first

    O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
    O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)

    --

Now scan with Ad-Aware and SpyBot. Remove everything they find.
    --

Reboot into Normal Mode and let me know how things are :)
