Considering if you aren't doing any professional or enthusiast work, I think a decent package is Nero 6 or 7 Ultra. You can basically get it retail for about $100, but depending on the sale/rebate/bid bargain, you can do MUCH better. With Nero you get all sorts of other CD/DVD burning goodies and a video editting package that is fairly simple to use and works, I think, great for home-style movies.

Microsoft Movie Maker works great for me. Very easy to use. You'll have to use Nero to convert and burn it to a DVD.

You need the Ultra Edition of the software. The package in the suite is called Nero Vision

You can check this on your installed version by selecting the DVD option in the selection box at the top of the Nero StartSmart window and then sweep your cursor over the Photo and Video icon. There should be a Make Your Own DVD-Video item in the popped-up menu. If it isn't there then you have a stripped down version of Nero.

    Hope that helps

As Madball said Windows 98 used to have a basic but effective editor built in although I havn't seen it in XP. Another alternative is Adobe Premiere but that is industry software and comes with an industry price tag! its still suprisingly easy to use though. One thing to beware is make sure you have acres hard disk space free. I produced and edited a short promtional video during my last year at uni and I think the project file was in the region of 20GB. Though there was a lot of extra video captured which ended up on the virtual cutting room floor and there were a lot of effects used. I believe the approximate ratio of uncompressed AVI Video is 4min to 1GB (someone correct me if im wrong).

Don't let it put you off. Its great fun and very rewarding.

XP comes with Windows Movie Maker. It should be in the Accessories folder on the Start Menu. Windows Update has ver. 2 for free download also.
