Question about Cat 5e cable.

I have heard that the PVC cable is illegal to run in the ceilings b/c of the gas it produces when on fire, but I have some other stuff that says it's UL type MPR/CMR and it says it's riser rated. Is that safe to run in the ceiling?

I should know this, but for some reason I do not. Any help would be nice.

I know that plenum cable is for running in ceilings and stuff, but I'm not sure if this is plenum rated. Is riser rated the same thing?

It's not necessarily "illegal" unless building code specifically forbids it in your state or locality. Riser rated doesn't necessarily mean plenum. If it is plenum cable, it will clearly state "plenum" on the sheath as well as the box.

Do you think it will be allright to use the riser rated stuff in our small business then? I think we might run it under the ceiling anyway, but I am just making sure it's ok.

You are definitely allowed to use PVC as riser cable. The only time you need to run plenum according to EIA/TIA is if you are running the cable through ductwork.

Well, I'm pretty sure the cable we have is not PVC, but I don't think we are running it through ductwork. We have the drop down ceiling where the tiles come out, so we just wanted to run it across the room in the ceiling. I'm not sure if we could get in trouble though for using the wrong type of cable, since we are a business.

You'll be fine. That's a perfectly valid installation.
