internet conection problem

My friend has a computer problem that has me stumped. Recently she has had trouble connecting to the internet. This seems to get fixed when I rebooted the modem. This is not a full time fix. But now, 1 click on Firefox and 4 connections are made. Actually any connection to the internet brings 4 connections (IM or e mail etc.).
Any thoughts?
