Abit NF7S SATA Issue? Folder not responding....

edited June 2011 in Hardware
Hi all, I am having an odd problem with my pc, one folder in there to be precise. Its a folder where i keep all my Divxs, i start to browse through is list view, icon view whatever, and the folder will just hang and i have to Ctrl Alt Del to get control back. Is this a problem with SATA or some other issue, maybe others have experienced and know the cause...? Everything elce works fine on the machine except I have tempremental USB on one port, especially with hooking up a digi cam vis usb to copy images.

Below details how everything is set up

The board is an Abit NF7S, Barton 2800, 2x 512 Crucial PC3200 DDR, Abit Silaro GF4 ti4200, Creative SB Live Audigy Plat, SATA Card, Network enabled, load of USB devices inc Cam Printer etc

I have Win XP SP2 installed to an IDE 60 gig drive, have another 60gig drive on the other IDE, two 80gig drives on the boards SATA header in Raid 0, and a 300 gig SATA drive running off an SATA card, theres 2 CD drives in there too, a DVDR and CDR and a couple of virtual DVD drives also. The Folder in question does hold alot of data (185GB) and as i said is all Divx/AVI files.

Any help would be appreciated, I think i have latest drivers and such, but it didnt seem to help any, maybe im way off thinking its a mobo driver problem and its some windows issue, either way, would be nice to get it sorted

Cheers

Trip

So this folder resides on the 300 Gig SATA drive hung off of the PCI SATA card? Are the drivers for the SATA card up to date? Are there any other folders on that drive that you can access easily? In Windows explorer, can you explore the drive at all? Does it show up properly in device manager? Which PCI SATA card is it?

HI, thanks for the replys, yea the drive runs off the sata card, the rest of the drive works fine, can access all other folders, copy to it, shows up where it should, works fine in explorer, also works fine accross the network as a shared drive. The only thing that doesnt work is that one folder. I can access the folder and browse it for a short while then it just hangs, same in explorer. Far as i know the cards drivers are fine, although i dont know a make, it was the only SATA card i could get form the place i got the drive, kinda a cheap plug it in and work job, if its relevant at all i can look into it i suppose but seen as the rest of the drive works fine, im guessing my problem lies elsewhere...As for the error checking, did it a while ago, but will do again tommorow, i often forget the simple solutions.....

Sounds like it's the old windows thumbnail error. What happens is that you try to open the folder, windows tries to show you thumbnails of the files in there but there's an error with one of the files so rather than skip that files it hangs. The way round it I always use is to reset all my folders to not show thumbnails.

go into another folder (c:\ for example), set the view to something like 'list' or 'details' and then use the 'view' tab on folder options to 'Apply to all folders'. This will set your current folder options to all folders. You should find that you can get into that folder now, you just need to figure out which file is giving windows problems. It might be one you don't have a codec installed for, or one that has become corrupted somehow.

Yea i thought it might have been the thumbnail thing, but the folder hangs whichever way i view it, list, details, icons etc so i sorta dismissed it and other folders on the drive are fine in thumbnail view. Your sugestion of a curropt file on there messing things up does interest me, is there a way to check avi files for errors in a batch? Id try individually but theres literally hundreds of them. Also i ran error checking on the drive, all was good
