System Error #384 (secure32.html)

Hi . . . I'm trying to help a friend with his computer (yes, really a friend). When i got the computer there was an ugly red and black sypware warning on his background and windows kept saying that the computer was infected with spyware. Everytime I start IE it takes me to a file on the c drive (secure32.html) which looks like the old DOS blue screen of death and starts with the heading "Detected SPYware! System Error #384."

I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot and was able to clear the background warning and windows is no longer telling me I'm infected, but I can't clear the start page. I went under internet options through control panel and changed it there, but each time I start IE it comes back to the same page. In looking at the hijack log, I can see where it's probably coming from, but am unsure of how to fix it w/o causing other problems.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Here is the hijack log:

OK that's much better. Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite Here. You'll need to update the program but don't run it yet!

Next reboot your PC into safe mode. Do that by restarting and then repeatedly pressing the F8 key until a menu appears. The top choice is safe mode. Hit enter to boot to this mode. Run the full Ewido scan and let the program quarantine/delete whatever it finds. This would probably also be a good time to run Spybot and Ad-Aware again as well as any anti-virus product you might have, I see you have Norton (make sure it's updated).

After all this completes boot back into normal mode and make sure all other windows are closed and run Hijack This again. Put a check next to each of the following entries and click "Fix Checked":

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PayTime] C:\WINDOWS\system32\paytime.exe
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDO WS\system32\auserinit.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PayTime] C:\WINDOWS\system32\paytime.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

After that you should disable and then re-enable system restore. To do that click "start", right click on "my computer", then left click on "properties". A menu will appear. You need to click the system restore tab. Put a check in the box that says "turn off sytem restore" then click apply. You will get a warning message, just click OK. Then uncheck the system restore box to turn system restore back on.

After all that post another Hijack This log. Make sure no other windows (programs) are open except Hijack This.

Here's the new hijack log. The comcast security manager was running when I ran hijack, but I couldn't figure out how to turn it off.

It seems to be fixed, but do you see anything else abnormal? (Well, that I should worry about.)

Hi. Good to hear back. Please run hijack this again and put a check mark next to the following entry and click "Fix Checked":

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqqkpq.exe reg_run

    Next navigate to this folder:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\

Then find and delete this file:

    pqqkpq.exe

It's possible the file might be hidden so you may have to change file and folder attributes to show all hidden files and folders. This is explained in This thread. Also do not worry if the file doesn't exist.

After you have done this post another Hijack This log.
  • edited January 2006
I know you said not to worry if it doesn't exist . . . it didn't, at least not in the windows\system32 directory. However, it did exist in two spybot recovery zip files and there was a c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\pqqkpq.exe-30271242.pf file. I did not delete any of these three files. Should I have? I'm not worried about the ones in the recovery zips, but the other is new to me.

Congrats your log is clean! Yes you should delete any other references to that file. We don't want it to ever be able to sneak in from an archive or something. Is there anything else you need?
  • edited January 2006
No. Thank you so much for your help. I shudder to think what the outcome might have been had I just guessed my way through it. A little knowledge is dangerous!!!!

Hi dodanto. With some help from one of the moderators here I've found you also need to run Hijack This again and have the program fix the following entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

    Sorry that was missed before.

Thanks for double checking. I'd already returned the computer and it took me a couple of days to get it back. But here's the newest log after fixing the ones you suggested.

    Thanks again.

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log. Please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

Download Killbox v2.0.0.175 and unzip the file to your Desktop and have it ready to use.

    -

Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kqqlk.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqqkpq.exe

    -

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqqkpq.exe reg_run

Open the text file you saved previously and left click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new silent runners log and an hijackthis log when you have rebooted.

Here are the logs. However, after doing the steps you suggested as I was creating the hijak log I noticed that

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqqkpq.exe reg_run

was still present. I went back and rebooted in safe mode, ran both utilities again, but the line is still there.

Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection!
    • Download WinPFind
      • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
      • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
      • Dont do anything with it yet!
    • Download Track qoo
      • Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop

    Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

    Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
    • Click "Start Scan"
    • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
    • Once the Scan is Complete
      1. Go to the WinPFind folder
      2. Locate WinPFind.txt
      3. Place those results in the next post!

    Reboot back to Normal Mode!

    Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If your Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Window asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

Here are the logs - Thanks!

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Unzip the fixme.reg file to your desktop, but do NOT merge it with your registry yet.

    ==

    Uninstall the following if present;

    BullsEye Network
    Web Offer
    System Soap Pro
    webHancer Survey Companion

Then delete the relevant folders in the Program Files folder.

    ==

Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\owwi.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\kwwlkw.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqqkpq.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kqqlk.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ruth Kemmy\Application Data\amee.exe

    -

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Double click the fixme.reg file to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new log when you have rebooted.

    ==

Once rebooted, post another hijackthis log.

None of the programs you listed appeared in add/remove programs. And there were no files or folders with those names in program files.

However, there was a file, procmanager.exe in the program files directory. A quick search of the web indicates that this file is associated with adware called virtual bouncer. I didn't delete the file, but renamed it and made sure it did not have an exe extensioin.

When running killbox it would not paste in the lines:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\kwwlkw.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ruth Kemmy\Application Data\amee.exe

The other three went in fine. I ran the utitlity letting it reboot, and rebooted back into safemode. I tried typing the ...amee.exe path directly into Killbox and told it to delete on reboot. When it went to reboot, I got the error:

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by external process.

I did not try the same thing with c:\...kwwlkw.exe

Your message said, "Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new log when you have rebooted.

    ==

Once rebooted, post another hijackthis log."

I assume you this was duplicative and you want a new hijackthis log. If you want another log, let me know.

When I first ran hijackthis, the line
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqqkpq.exe reg_run

was still there. I checked it and fixed it, then rebooted again.

    Here is the new log:

Sorry about that. Got my canned replies mixed up :D.

Your log looks clean, but I suggest that you update Ewido then boot into safe mode and run it. Let it clean up what it finds and post it's log back here.
You may need to do a few reboots to make sure that Qoologic has indeed gone.

No sign of the nasties though :D.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    ===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ewido anti-malware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

    Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
