weird one, fan for laptop

I doubt I'm going to be able to fix this one, but I can but try. My girlfriend has a sony laptop, a vaio something or other, with a 2.8 P4 in it that runs hot as holy hell. Recently the fan has started making a terrible racket whenever it spins up. On removing the fan and playing around with it it seems to be off centre, ie if you rotate the fan manually you can feel that it isn't sitting right. Is there anywhere I can get these fans from? It's a blower type arrangement that sucks in air from the bottom and blows it out horizontally through a set of fins that are connected by what looks like a heatpipe to the processor fan. Here's a couple of ideas I've come up with in case I can't get a replacement:

connect a standard case fan to the rear of the laptop via some sort of duct and run it from a USB socket: can you do this with USB? ie: just connect up to the +5v line and the GND and run a fan from it?

use one of those notebook coolers that clips underneath your laptop: not sure if this will have any effect as its the rear of the laptop that needs cooling, not the bottom

trim the fan: ie cut bits off the blades so it won't catch on the casing and make a noise even if it is off centre, not sure if this will even work but it's worth a try as a last resort I guess.

anyone else got any ideas?

Contact the manufacture and see how much a replacement fan would be for it!

Mfr part is best, but you can find small fans at http://www.jameco.com/ . See if it is about an inch and one half across, and if so a 40mm fan might work. http://www.cyberguys.com/ also has 40 mm fans. BUT, do not try the USB thing, fans are normally 12 volt and not 5 Volt.
