Why do my Quicktime files get corrupted?

I have some Quicktime files stored on CDs (specifically, an 8 CD set of all 372 Computer Stew episodes, which was a Webshow that was made in 2000-2001). They stay intact on the CDs. But if I load a few episodes to my hard drive and try to play them after a couple of months, they won't play! It says they are corrupted! None of my files that play in Real Player or Windows Media have done this.

Also, at www.americanmovie.com , They have some short videos that can be downloaded in Quicktime, and they get corrupted also. Then I have to re-download them.

I have Quicktime for Windows on my computer ( Windows XP ), but I mostly use WMP 9.

If you play them directly from the CD they work, but when you copy them to the HD they don't?

Seems to me like your IDE controller for that HD might be bad or the IDE cable or the HD could be going out. Strange that it doesn't happen to the other players . . . perhaps they handle errors better. Try another IDE cable and see if it remedies the problem. Also, check and make sure you have the most recent version of your IDE driver and most recent version of QuickTime.

If I load them to the hard drive and then play them from the hard drive they are okay.

But after they sit around on the hard drive for a couple months they start going bad.

I've got XP SP1, IE 6.0 SP1, the Windows Media Player 9.0 codecs, Real Player 7, QT for Windows, Macromedia Flash, and Cyberlink PowerDVD. And QT for Windows is the only one that has problems. And I have miscellaneous other drivers and codecs (AC3 audio filter, DivX, Xvid) as well.

I tried loading a zipped QT file to Windows Movie Maker 2.0 to convert it, but MM2 wouldn't accept it.
