Hi! Problem with Spyware?

Hi,

I think I may have a spyware problem. My computer is still functioning, but when I click the icon to access the internet, rather than taking me to my homepage, I keep getting taken to an "Online Security" page that says I've got spyware that is being controlled by remote. I'm know that some of the suggested remedies on that same page are fake, like Spy Sheriff, but I'm not sure how to get rid of it. I've scanned my computer multiple times with multiple programs, but am still getting the message. Do you think you might be able to help me out? Any assistance would be much appreciated! (Also, I've attached a hijackthis report, which I hope will help some.)
Thanks again!

Hi fantastic 4. That was a pretty good movie! You are running Hijack This from a temp folder. You need to move it to it's own folder off the root directory. You can name the folder Hijack This or HJT for simplicity. You can then run the scan from a desktop shortcut. Do that and post another log.

Okay, I think this new scan should do the trick...

If you are still using Ewido Security Suite and it's updated and the most current version then you need to restart the PC in safe mode. To do that just restart the PC and repeatedly press the F8 key until a start up menu appears. The top choice is safe mode. Once it is started run a full Ewido scan and let the program quarantine/delete whatever if finds.

Next restart in normal mode. You need to make sure you can view all hidden files and folders. To do this open "My Computer", click the "tools" pull down menu and then click "folder options". Click on the "view" tab. Then click on the bubble that says "show hidden files and folders" then uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" and "hide protected operating system files." NOTE--We will want to remember to change this back when we are done.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\windows\system32 folder. Find this file--mssearchnet.exe. Delete it once you find it and don't be alarmed if it doesn't exist.

Close all open windows and run Hijack This again. Put a check next to the following entries and click "Fix Checked":

After all this post a fresh Hijack This log. Make sure no other windows/programs are open. Only the Hijack This window.

After updating to the newest version of Ewido, I did a scan. I followed your instructions and was able to find the file mssearchnet.exe, but it didn't allow me to delete it. Also, I was able to delete a couple of things on the Hijack This scan, but even after trying to fix the following,

What did it say when you tried to delete mssearchnet.exe? Did it say the file was in use? We may have to manually kill the 023 service entries even though no files appear to be associated with them. Just let me know what it said when you tried to delete the mssearchnet.exe file and we'll go from there.

Also did you save a log from the Ewido scan? If so could you post it? Thanks.

When I tried to delete mssearchnet.exe, it did say that it was in use. As far as the log from the Ewido scan, I didn't save it. Sorry if that makes things more difficult!

That's OK don't worry about the Ewido scan.

Start your PC in safe mode and then run Hijack This. Put a check next to the following and click "Fix Checked":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {27150f81-0877-42e9-af13-55e5a3439a26} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpA5B4.tmp

Next use windows explorer to navigate back to the mssearchnet.exe file and try deleting it again. It should delete in safe mode. Restart in normal mode and post another Hijack This log.

Hi Fantastic4, Welcome to Short-Media :)
-

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click 'Fix Checked':

===================================================
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {27150f81-0877-42e9-af13-55e5a3439a26} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpA5B4.tmp
===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido: (Do not use the computer while Ewido is scanning as it may interrupt the scan)
• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
