Please please help! Spyware problem

Unknown

Ok, so I accidentally (I had a stupid moment) installed an activex control (or something that was disguised as one) and am now being bombarded with spyware. Norton picks it up as being QoolAid. I reboot my computer and the problem just gets worse and worse. Have run adaware which is also picking up the problem, but it just keeps replenishing itself every time I open my browser (IE). Whatever website I go to, I keep getting the little pop-up under the address bar asking me to install an activex control (obviously I am not going to make that mistake again. Please anyone help!

I have posted this on a few forums now and nowone seems to be able to help, any assistance would be appreciated.

Darn those nasty little ActiveX controls This will take a few steps so I hope you don't mind. First thing to do is to download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite (anti-malware) Here. Next update the Ewido program but don't run it yet.

Next restart your PC in safe mode. To do that reboot your PC and while it's booting just repeatedly tap the F8 key. A menu will appear and safe mode is the top choice on the menu. Highlight that and press enter.

Once in safe mode run a full scan with Ewido. Save the log file from Ewido. Boot back into normal mode. Run Hijack This again and make sure it's the only open window (no other programs running). Put a check mark next to the following entries and click Fix Checked. Don't be alarmed if they don't exist:

Next thing to do is to make sure you can view all hidden files and folders. To do this open "My Computer", click the "tools" pull down menu and then click "folder options". Click on the "view" tab. Then click on the bubble that says "show hidden files and folders" then uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" and "hide protected operating system files." NOTE--We will want to remember to change this back when we are done.

Next open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\windows\system32 folder. Find the following file and delete it. Don't be alarmed if it doesn't exist:

ooyoio.exe

Next navigate to the C:\windows folder and find the following files and delete them. Don't be alarmed if they don't exist:

banmanpro.exe
enewsletterpro.exe

Next go to the root directory C:\ and find the following file and delete it. Don't be alarmed if it doesn't exist:

drsmartloadb.exe

After you have done this post the Ewido log and another Hijack This log.

Thankyou so much for your help! I did everything you asked, only problem is, I saved the Ewido log to the desktop in safe mode, but when I rebooted it it has dissapeared! Not sure how to get it back. Here is the latest HiJackThis log. Thankyou again!

Other than that your log is clean! If you don't want that search bar then run Hijack This again and put a check next to each of the above entries and click "Fix Checked".

Are you still having problems? Let me know.

If everthing is OK you might want to go back and "protect" the hidden and system files by reversing the steps we took to unhide them. If something accidentally got deleted or modified it could spell big trouble.

As a final clean up you should run a complete Ad Aware scan again and you should download and run Spybot Search and Destroy Here.

Everything is running great now! Thankyou so much. No definately do not want the search bar there so I have deleted that, just one last question, I am a little concerned about the following two entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CU1] C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCClient.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CU2] C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCMain.exe

When the spyware was running rampant, a window kept popping up saying that 'VCClient.exe couldn't run'. It looked a bit suspicious to me. Do you know anything about it? Should I remove these two entries too?

Apart from that everything is great now, thankyou again for your help!

Yes you are quite correct. I'm sorry I missed those. Go ahead and have hijack this fix those and also navigate to those folders and delete the files:

VCClient.exe
VCMain.exe

If they exist. Don't worry if they aren't there. You are quite welcome for the help and if you need us again let us know.
