Help! In Big Trouble With Family! (Spyware Strike?!)

Hi all,

I have a current problem with this spyware investation called "Spyware Strike" which has basically embedded itself onto my toolbar giving me warning's that I have infections that I need to remove them by buying their products. My homepage has now been changed to link removed giving me links to malware etc. Our anti-norton virus doesn't seem to pick it up when scanning, infact it doesn't pick up anything.

The original problem came from the fact that I was watching free sports clips and such and to view them I had to download this special codec (which I did :p) but it gave me all this spyware strike rubbish that I can't get rid of.

This is a real problem, I'm in trouble with my family at the moment who are not speaking to me because of this. It's a new pc, bought by our gran, and I've been in trouble about this before (dad was forced to re-boot it a few times). So if I can get any help on how to get rid of this "spyware strike" investation then please help me. My parents are fuming and that's the last thing I want when I've got uni exams coming up on the 20th and 23rd later on this month.:(

Anyway guys here's my log file:

Thanks,

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click 'Fix Checked':

    ===================================================
    O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {27150f81-0877-42e9-af13-55e5a3439a26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp8ABB.tmp
    ===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido: (Do not use the computer while Ewido is scanning as it may interrupt the scan)
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.

    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know if any problems persist.

    Hi Trogan_1000,

Thanks for the help, although I appear to be having difficulty trying to obtain the "Scan your pc" button from this site:

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Might be a javascript problem, as I can see the button, but it doesn't load anything up. Do you know how I can fix it?

    Not sure. Try this scan:

    BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Don't forget to post a new HJT log after, along with the other files.

You mentioned in your first post about popups from Spyware Strike. Well, I just found out that Spyware Strike is a new infection and a fix is being worked on. If your still getting the popups, this is the reason why.

Once I got the fix I'l let you know about it...Stay Tuned :)

I'm sorry I can't help you because I have the same problem! I have run the MicrosoftAntispyware Beta, Norton Antivurus 2006, and Spybot--nothing is getting rid of this beast!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there no freedom from its clutches?

If the annoying popup on the sys tray is pissing you off try this:

    Look under

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler

    Remove the keys

    "{438755C2-A8BA-11D1-B96B-00A0C90312E1}"="Browseui preloader"
    "{8C7461EF-2B13-11d2-BE35-3078302C2030}"="Component Categories cache daemon"
    "{C1A2FDA2-2A5B-2C8A-F2A2-BA2DB3A2C31C}"="WaitWain for Windows"

    Restart...

The icon and popup bubble will be gone forever!!!

Sorry to sound a little stupid, I'm not great with computers but could you tell me how I can access:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler

It's gonna be something blatantly obvious I know, but I can't seem to find/know how to do it.:p

SharpShooter, please do not edit the registry. If you do not know what your are doing and make a mistake, you may damage your computer.

Short-Media or me are not responsible if you make a mistake.

Did you follow the instructions in my previous post? If so, then post a new HJT log.
