Hi guys,

My ZoneAlarm has picked up a Win32.tactslay.u trojan and I don't know how to remove it. I've run AVG (which finds a trojan but can't remove it), Spybot, Adaware, Microsoft Antispyware & BT Antispyware but neither can pick it up or remvove it.

I've just finished running Trojan Hunter trial but that hasn't found anything either.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

    Hi Markus. Download Hijack This from here and post the log. We'll take a look at it and see if we can find out what's causing your problem.

    :\DOCUME~1\MARKD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis_199.zip\

    Please move it to its own folder somewhere off the root directory. You can name the folder HJT or Hijack This for simplicity. Post back another log after you do that.

    I don't mean to be thick but if I save it in My Documents; would that do?

    That would work. The idea is not to run it from a temp folder. Also when you run it be sure that no other programs are running. Hijack This should be the only open window.

    Hi Markus. Sorry it has taken awhile to get back with you. Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.

    Install the program and update it but don't run it yet.

    Next please do a Trend Micro Housecall scan here.

    Allow Trend Micro to delete anything it finds.

    Next restart your PC in safe mode and run a complete Ewido scan. Allow Ewido to delete anything it finds. Save the log file from the Ewido scan and post it back here along with a fresh Hijack This log.

    Hi Markus. Don't worry about the delayed response.

    I'm just not seeing anything in your log that appears to be hallmark signs of any variant of the tactslay trojan. Ewido would have caught it and then we would have at least known a possible location of the trojan. I understand your Zone Alarm is picking up the trojan but could you please post back with a recap of all the symptoms you are having? We might have to run a different kind of scan to find the infection. Also please post back the older Ewido log if it's different from the one you posted and another Hijack This log. This time when you run Hijack This could you please make sure that Hijack This is the only open window. All other programs should be closed when you run the scan. I look forward to hearing back.

    I appreciate your continued efforts.

    If I run AVG or Zone Alarm Virus scans they don't pick up anything. However every once in a while both will pop up saying there's a trojan.

    AVG says the following:

    Zone Alarm refers to it as Win32.tactslay.u and also makes reference to the above file.

    OK it would appear from your description that the trojan is hiding in a system restore volume. One way we might be able to kill any instance of it would be to turn off system restore (that will purge all the restore points) and then turn it back on.

    To do this click "start" and right click on "my computer". The bottom selection on the menu says "properties", left click on that.

    Left click on the "system restore" tab. Put a check in the box that says "turn off system restore on all drives", then click "apply".

    A warning message will appear. Go ahead and click "yes" at this warning. It might take a few seconds to purge all the restore points.

    Next uncheck the box that says "turn off system restore on all drives". This will turn system restore back on. If the trojan is hiding there and trying to infect the PC via the restore volumes this should delete it. Post back with a fresh Hijack This log and let me know if your Zone Alarm picks up the trojan. The AV software won't clean it if it's in a system restore volume.

    I've gone through the system restore procedure. I'll run Zone Alarm again but as before it probably won't pick anything up. The Zone Alarm message and AVG only pop up when I don't run them.

    See what you make of the Hijack log below but I'll probably have to give it a few days to see if the message pops up again.

    Just a thing or 2 in your log. None of these are related to tactslay. Run Hijack This again and put a check (tick) next to the following line and click Fix Checked. Make sure all other programs (windows) are closed when you do this.

    Do you use the party poker program? If not I would recommend that you uninstall it in the "add remove programs" dialogue in the control panel. Let me know if you get any other warning messages regarding tactslay.

    Log looks good. Let me know if you get any more warnings. It's OK to keep the party poker program. Sometimes programs like this can be related to malicious activity but if you've had it and used it for awhile don't worry about it.
