What should I do with my XBOX?

Give me your CHEAP or FREE idea's and I shall make it so ;)

My XBOX's DVD-ROM killed out, damned durty thompson's SUCK! So I deem it useless now, except for MOD purposes of course ;)

I was thinking of going all out and turning it into a full fledged PC for Email and Internet purposes, then of course reselling it. Complete with REAL USB Connections.

But one thing I WISH I could do is buy a DVD+/-RW so I could backup my current games and run it witha MOD Chip. This way I can have the best of both worlds. Appearently there is no way of getting a replacement DVD-ROM for less than 70 bucks, which I would rather buy a new or used XBOX for just a bit more. No MOD's to turn other DVD-ROMs into XBOX capable for Original Disks.

So, give me your ideas.

Well I personally dont know much about the dvd-rom drives, I know there are quite a few people who have put a specific model in that will allow them to read cd-rs as well as dvd-r/rw +R/rw and cd-rw.

I do however know that modded xboxes ROCK!!! I have had mine modded for quite some time now and just love it. I think the most practical application of a modded xbox is use as a multimedia player. It will play any mekdia format you can doenload off Kazaa. And I have a TON of divx/xvid backups (of movies I own of course ;) ) It will also play streaming internet radio stations.

And you dont necessarily NEED a optical drive to play games on it. You could just have a friend rip them for ya, or download them from the web, and ftp them to the xbox hdd, they load much faster this way.

You could also install linux on it and surf the web and all that crap, even reun a webserver on it. I believe the Gentoox website is run on an xbox, and it actually streams the install info to your xbox during the installation (i think thats how it works anyways). Personally I am not a big fan of linux, and have a winXP PC i use on my tv for hi rez gameplay and all that. But when I have time I will throw linux on there just to say I have done it :) .

So I say go for it!! MOD that beotch!

//edit: btw check out Xbox-Scene for more great uses for the sweetest console on teh planet :) A mod chip is 50$ but you would prolly want a bigger hard drive in it too. So its neither free or cheap. I guess that depends on what ya consider cheap though.

You could send it off to be repaired by Microsoft.

Or you could do what I was going to do if I won an X-Box in a giveaway - MAKE IT FOLD!!! :fold:
It'd be difficult to do without a cd-rom to boot the X-Box Linux from, though.

If just the physical mechanism for the DVD-ROM died, you can look for a DVD-ROM of the same model on eBay or google or wherever and swap the logic boards (of the drive). They're usually connected to the optical heads by ribbon cable, so all you'll need is a few screwdrivers and some patience.

Nope, the DVD Drive is dead, this is confirmed now. Nothing I can do that is cheap for the XBOX to make it play normally again... I have no idea how the hell I will get Linux running on it though.
