Can't boot Windows or run from CD

edited January 2006 in Hardware
I'm running Windows XP on an HP computer with a 766 MHz Celeron processor and 256 MB SDRAM. When my computer boots it gets to the Windows encountered an error, select an option to continue booting. I've tried every option and it will not get to a command prompt or boot in safe mode. If I try to run Windows normally, my computer just keeps restarting. I tried running it from the installation CD and as soon as it gets to "starting Windows" it hangs. I don't even get an option to run the repair console.

I've tried installing a new hard drive and all I get is errors from the CD, such as nstolder.exe is corrupt or dsmboot.exe is corrupt.

Any ideas?

Thanks....

A round of Memtest-86 might be a good idea. :)

Sure enough, one of the memory sticks was bad. Removed it and the computer booted fine.

    Thanks for the help.
