DVD Rom Problems

I had been noticing that my new DVDrom used too much cpu when installing software, and now Sandra confirms it with this...

Warning W5206 - The drive index seems low.
Fix: While this is a generic warning - i.e. it does not specify the nature of the problem - generally, the problem would be the lack of DMA bus-mastering which forces the drive to work in PIO mode which not only hurts performance but also increases CPU utilisation. Check that the controller drivers are installed and that DMA is enabled for the channel and the drive itself.

Anyways, I thought the DMA stuff was plug and play and should be working automatically? Is this a Bios issue? Thanks.

Windows 2000. They are both on seperate cables so they should be on different ide channels right??

I'll give some pertinent info before I run off to class.

    Shuttle FN45 Mainboard
    AMD 3000+
    Maxtor 60gb, 7200, 8mb cache
    Windows 2000
    Optorite DVD+-RW
    512 Ram

:) correct, you should never have a CD drive and a HDD on the same channel, because the HDD is the slowest component of your computer, the cd drive transfering data on the same channle would have to wait for the data to go from the cd drive past the hdd to the mobo, ram, processor, then back up the same channel stoping the rest of the data to the HDD

So how do I get this thing to run right? I checked the bios last night and couldn't find anything that would allow me to change any setting that relates, although I was very tired.

Thats what I'm going to do. Pulled the one out that came with the system, and found some damage to it (Seems it was cut in one spot and was touching the chassis). All the stuff I see though is 40 pin, 80 conductor, is that right?

edit// looks like I found some info on it. Thanks

Check the device manager --> properties for the secondary IDE channel --> Use DMA if available

The stuff I have is the 80, not the 40. I'll get a new one though for the DVD that isn't cut, and doesn't have the connector for slave since the things in the shuttle.

That did it, it was booting in PIO for some reason. Ran Sandra, but it gave me the same error, but at least this time it wasn't using the CPU when it ran the benchie. It still says my CDROM speed is 13x, but its data transfer is right where it should be for 4x DVD. Damn this new computer, somethings funny, but I can't quite figure out what it is....

Yup, a shuttle. Mini system, pretty cool, although I'm starting to wish I just built a regular one, that, or not buying the damn Communist DVD drive for it.....

    Arm,
Aren't the data transfer rates for both CD-ROMs and DVDs WAY slower than the average hard drive? I always read not to put a hard disk on the same IDE channel as a hard drive, because the CD-ROM slows the hard drive down.
