Someone help please? Computer won't start and I have no idea...

edited January 2006 in Hardware
Usually when it won't start it says something along the lines of:

A disk read error has occured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete

Usually I have to press F8 for a while and it'll work.

I was getting impatient and at the HP screen where it says something about press F2, I did it...could I have messed something up there?

Cause now when I try to turn it on it says:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Swtup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Please help I have no idea.

This seems to be a common problem. To get you started, there is a wealth of information in this thread. I'd read through it and try some of the things which have worked for others. Post #39 in particular is worth checking out.

It would be a good idea to run the diagnostic program from the Hard Drive manufacturer as well.

If none of that works, post back here, tell us what you have already tried, and we'll go from there. If you have any questions just yell. :)

I don't have any of those disks that came with the computer.

I got it for Christmas from my brother who traded for it with his best friend for a bike frame.

It needed a lot of work when he first got it...usually it is perfect now.
