loss use of virus scanner and spyware scanners

edited February 2006 in Spyware & Virus Removal
My friends comp has some sort of virus that prevents the use of virus scanners (he has AVG) and any sort of spyware scanners. It has also altered the appearance of the task manager. Its horribly evident that he has spyware so im looking for a big clean up. Thanks in advance for the help, I really appreciate it. Let me know if you need anymore info.

    Has no one encountered anything like this? Should I just tell him to reformat? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Please go to Jotti's and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe

    ===============

    Let's look for, and delete, any program segments (prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from your PC. To do this, let's:

    1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

    pgws.exe*
    62656A676A6E6F.exe*

    2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

    Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

    ===============

    Next, Open a command prompt by:

    1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
    2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
    3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

    -

    Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

    Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) owner ... (C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe)
    Windows Overlay Components owner ... (C:\WINDOWS\ceqsztp.exe)

    Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services. Once stopped, set this service to disabled.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\igps.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pgws.exe
    C:\Program Files\Network\network.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\62656A676A6E6F.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ceqsztp.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\Network
    C:\Program Files\QL

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\igps.exe

    Search for...

    ALCXMNTR.EXE

    ...using "Start | Search...".

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    I found both Pgws.exe and 62656a676a6e6f.exe in system32 folder, I was confused at what you meant by prefetch folder? Should I delete both in safe mode?

    I was not able to stop Lsass but I was able to stop the Wondows overlay Components.

    I tried to kill those highlighted processes but it said it could not be killed. That it was already closed or protected by windows.

    I also just went through and deleted all the files and folders you mentioned. Here is the new log. I havent deleted it but im sure atleset.exe and atleset.ocx should be deleted?

    It appears that the spyware is gone but I still cant open up adaware or AVG.

    Thanks again for the help so far.

    You have a new infection now so we will get rid of that next.

    Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Turn your computer back on.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

    E2 Give
    WebHancer

    The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

    ===============

    Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

    In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

    OR

    You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

    regsvr32 /u IeBHOs.dll
    regsvr32 /u whiehlpr.dll
    regsvr32 /u qlink32.dll

    It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiabcj.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe,atleset.exe
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDO WS\system32\atleset.exe,C:\Documents and Settings\Katte\Application Data\Explorer\atleset.exe

    O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\E2G
    C:\Program Files\webHancer
    C:\Program Files\QL

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiabcj.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Katte\Application Data\Explorer\atleset.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\igps.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\netabdfc.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

    Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

    1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
    2) Next, "Enable all protection".
    3) Exit the program.

    -

    Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    Download Killbox v2.0.0.175 and unzip the file to your Desktop and have it ready to use.

    -

    Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Katte\Application Data\Explorer\atleset.exe

    -

    Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

    Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe,atleset.exe
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDO WS\system32\atleset.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebControl Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebControl Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe

    O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe (file missing)

    Open the text file you saved previously and left click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
    Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new log when you have rebooted.

    ==

    Please go to Jotti's and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

    C:\s4.exe

    I was able to run AVG and Adaware once I got rid of atleset. So that should of helped. They both detected many viruses/spyware that were deleted. I looks like I should do the same with S4? Thanks again.

    I agree :).

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Open a command prompt by:

    1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
    2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
    3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

    -

    Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

    socks proxy daemon ... (C:\s4.exe)

    Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services. Once stopped, set this service to disabled.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\s4.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [socks proxy daemon] C:\s4.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [socks proxy daemon] C:\s4.exe

    O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe (file missing)

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    C:\s4.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\atleset.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
    Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
    Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1) Restart your computer
    2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

    For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

    Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.

    Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
