Device Manager Fails to Recognize Anything

Hi All,

I am trying to install my iPod and have discovered that my device manager doesn't recognize anything. There should be USB Port Options to look at, but when I click on Device Manager, there is nothing present. The screen is blank. I am running Windows 2000 and would like to know if there are any options for me other than having to reinstall Windows.

Any suggestions?

odd..... i had the same problem with an ipod also....
is yours an ipod nano? anyway has it ever read the ipod or is this the first time youre trying it?

This is the first time I am trying it. It's a 5th Gen. iPod with Video. However, I am more concerned that the computer doesn't list anything in the Device Manager. It should at the very least recognize that there are USB Ports in operation.

When you say "doesn't recognize anything", do you mean that literally, as in absolutely nothing at all?

Yes, Prof...I mean literally nothing. The Device Manager Screen is Blank.

Are you logging on as an Adminstrator? If you are, my guess would be that you either have a spyware infection or that it's time for a Repair Install.

Run HijackThis and post a log here. If it looks clean we'll move on to something else. If not, we'll direct you to our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum so our experts can get you fixed up.

Your log looks fine.

Did the items in Device Manager only recently disappear, or were they never there at all? If the former, I'd try System Restore to roll back to a recent restore point. If they were never there I think you may save a lot of grief in the long run by going ahead and doing a Repair Install.

Before you do that, make sure the Plug and Play Service is set to "Automatic".

Thanks for the advice. How do I do a Repair Install, or a System Restore?

I don't know the last time I ever checked my device manager, so it's entirely possible that things never appeared. It's also possible that they did until recently.

Are you logged on as an Adminstrator and did you check the Plug and Play Service, then reboot afterwards?

Another thing to try is to open a Command Prompt, type in sfc /scannow and see if Windows finds any missing files or files in the wrong version.

If that didn't do the trick, for a Repair Install you boot from the WinXP CD and proceed as if you were doing a clean install. At some point in the process, Windows Setup will detect your existing version. Choose the option to repair it - NOT add a new copy of Windows, etc.

BTW: This has nothing to do with the Recovery Console "Repair" business.

before u try that if u havent started already tahat is... try system restore. in normal winxp, go to start, programs, acceries, system tools, system restore. itll take u thru a pretty straitforward wizrd. now try to restore it to the last point possible. if it still has a prob move a few possible slots back and try again. this may take a while but it could save all ur data w/o makin a backup. ITS MY B-DAY IN 5 DAYS!!!! yay!! NEW SYS IN 4 DAYS!!!!!
