Problems with internet, Can't Connect

edited January 2006 in Science & Tech
Ok heres the deal, my laptop cannot get an IP address through DHCP when it is connected directly into the modem, haven't bought a router yet which I know I should, through a cable since I dont have wireless capabilities.
Heres what I've noticed: When I run IPCONFIG/ALL it tells me I have an Automatic private IP address. I thought, well I'll put in a use configured IP with information from a computer that will work, and that still doesnt allow me access.
I've tried releasing and renewing, i've tried a flushdns, i tried to repair the connection(didnt work), and I've tried WinsockFix since I thought maybe the problem was related to old viruses I had. And yes I have reset my modem which I really didn't think could be the problem since another computer works fine with it. Nothings working and I've run out of ideas. Any kind of help or ideas on what I could try would be greatly appreciated.

NVM I'm pretty sure I figured out the problem. I think since I don't have a router I have to reset the modem for it to give an IP to a new computer, and I believe everytime i reset it I had it connected to the computer that had the IP and not the laptop which I was trying to get an IP for.
