how does everyone organize their mp3's? I have roughly 12 dvd's of mp3's that im moving to my fileserver and they are pretty random i didnt burn all of them i was given about 8 of them. I have some that complete cd's are on there some are just a few songs by an artist. So im just trying to get it all organized cause its a lot of music. Oh also is there a software app that would sort and see if there's is any duplicates of songs so i dont have too?

you either love it or hate it, but iTunes for me, is the answer to my organizational woes. It organizes everything automatically. Very easy.

    Most people hate it, though.

well i like to use winamp for playing. what i mean when i have them on my fileserver is there a easy way to organize the folders? and put them in order automatically. Will itunes take all my mp3s and put them in folders by artist and check for duplicates?

I am also a user of itunes, it just makes things easy. If there are duplicate files in different locations, it will not delete them. If you tell it to, it will remove it from your list of songs or delete it entirely.

Not sure of software that will fill in the id tags automatically, since someone would have to come up with a database with the digital fingerprint of every file to match up to. I know that some of the music corps have such a devil, for hunting filesharers.

I use the Windows Media Player Library function along with managing my folder system on the HD. The WMP option is great, especially since it is included already. Check webattack.com for freeware options for organizing media.

Okay. Here we go. An overly large collection has taught me a few lessons.

    I have mine grouped drive\music\artist\album(s)\song(s).

I really only have full albums, so I'm not sure how to help you with single songs. I still suggest that way.

For ALL (I mean it) of your renaming woes, use Tag & Rename. It will be able to rename/tag the files based on a mask you tell it to use. If there's nothing there, if it's a full album, it can look it up on FreeDB (like CDDB but non-commercialized, meaning they don't need a license to access it), or Amazon.

After you've got what you want tagged, you can rename folders based on another, customizable mask. You can do this en masse, too. I usually go through, correct tags, rename folders. It takes me about half an hour to do for roughly 5,000 songs. It's really not a lot of work, so I tend to let it build up before I restructure things into my main folder.

I don't know how iTunes works exactly, but I don't even let it see my files, no sir. I'm sorry, but iTunes on a PC is just not practical for a large library.

I do it manually, and then in Winamp I just play out of the media library. For album-based playing, there's a very nice plugin out there called AlbumList. It works amazingly well, and generally picks up on missing/not tagged info. Definitely a must-have. Anymore info, feel free to pm me.

i just dont want to go through manually. these id tags for this music is jacked up. the music sounds good but the guy who gave it to me semi labeled them and some songs are not titled right. i used musicbrainz and out of 5000 songs it had 2000 unidentified so i am trying to get them straight

I have about 250 files. I have them on my 2nd HD in a MUSIC folder, alphabetized, named, and all formatted the same ("Artist - Song").
