No images - MSIE 6 & Win98

A friend has a computer with Windows 98 & MSIE 6.0 -- which refuses to display images without a manual tweak each page.

I found out that what's wrong -- Encoding. Images work when set to "Western European (Windows)" but don't work when set to "Western European (ISO)". They change each page.... I've gone down lists of settings and all check out just fine. Why doesn't it work like every other computer?!

I've never seen this.. so I'm baffled by it. I've ran Windows Update many times. Grabbed anything that might look interesting -- even had it working during 1 boot. Restarted it and poof!

You can go in the menu and change it every time you click a link -- but that's annoying.

His dad called SBC (ISP) to see if there was any fix for it inside the Yahoo Browser they provide.. and something to this effect was said--
solely the fault of Microsoft internet explorer because they're the main browser on the computer and formed a 'skin' over all the other browsers
Yeah.... right... :hrm: He asked for clarification and was told to call Microsoft. :rolleyes2

I'm think it's a character set problem.. but that's just a guess.

SO: Anyone know what's wrong? A fix? TIA.. :)

Finally got a chance to go over there and give it a try.

    1) No luck uninstalling IE :hrm: It's a K6-2 350MHz so I tapped out before I would have normally. I was looking for the IEradicator before it froze..... I quit.. Ring the bell :(

    2) Downloaded Firebird and it works perfectly.

    3) Checking through Regional Settings to make sure it wasn't set on something weird.. and well.. Look below. If I try to change it, it BSODs. Could this cause the Character Set problem?

    :wtf:

Interestingly enough, my computer with these IE problems DOES NOT have the Regional Settings issue, BUT another computer of mine Without these IE problems does have the same Regional issues. Perhaps two unrelated problems?? (BTW I did not try to change the Regional Settings for fear of a BSOD)

    I'm trying other things now.

Okay this is a WORK AROUND and not a fix:

from Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 283807:
Note that in some cases you may also be able to resolve this problem by manually editing the registry. For example, if the28591 String value is missing from the following registry key, a Web page that is encoded for the Western European (ISO) code page might not display any images:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage

The value for this registry key should be set to the name of the appropriate code page file in your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder. For the Western European (ISO) code page, this value should be either Cp_28591.nls (Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition) or C_28591.NLS (Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP). For additional information about the character sets that are supported by Internet Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/reference/charsets/charset4.asp

Hmmm...could it be that Cp_28591.nls is what's corrupted? But I replaced ALL my .nls files from system disk so I suspect the file is not corrupt.

    My Workaround:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage\28591
double click 28591 and replace value data CP_28591.nls with CP_1252.nls close regedit and reboot.

All works fine. But that does not satisfy me completely. I feel that some thing/one did this in an illegal way. I'll send a report to microsoft next week if this work around holds.
(from Cybertechhelp.com) Hi Merrick - your log is fine. There is no evidence of any hijack. Just a thought here, I use Spyblocker and it does block some graphics and will not open some links as it has been configured to block ads, bugs, scripts etc on a page. Try disabling Adshield and see if you notice a difference

Disabled ADSHEILD which was explained by Hijack This: as a potential portal for malicious hackers. As a side note, I was using the original freeware ADSHEILD which is now replaced by a commercial version for $30. Call me paranoid ( :o "Paranoid! :celebrate " ) But I wonder if Adsheild has a hand in this.

As stated before there is more info on this issue here:

Thanks to all who have helped in this.
