Suround Sound Help

edited October 2003 in Hardware
I just put in my new ABIT IS7 Board in, and now I have:

Front Speaker Out
Line In
Mic
Rear Speaker Out
Center/Sub Speaker Out

I also have 2 Fiber Optic connections, but my speakers don't use them.

So anyways, I haven't had Suround Sound before, so I never tweaked with it before. My Speakers are 4.1 Suround SOund from Altec. They have the Front Speaker out, Rear Speaker OUt, and Center/Sub Out.

But when I do the tests, it don't seem to work, and i have it setup in the sound profile as suround sound and all that too. Whats up?

I assume that means that you have your speaker options set like this:

Do none of the speakers work, or just the fronts, just the rears, everything but the center, or some combination of them?

    I don't have a center. As I stated above it is a 4.1

I don't know how to explain it, except that it runs simila to a 2 speaker setup. Except my front and rear speakers work.

For instance when I do the TEST thing, and click on my Front left speaker to play a sound, BOTH my REAR LEFT and FRONT LEFT speakers play the soun, the same goes for the Right Side.

BUT if I push the REAR LEFT speaker to play a sound, no sound comes out.

    My sub works fine.

Are they not supposed to all have their OWN sound? this way I can know that a hail of bullets are coming from my back left or my front right, whereever it came from in the game?

make sure the miniplugs are connected completely to the back of the PC and the speakers. Some 4.1 speaker systems are made so that if they are not recieving (after 3 tried, F* the spelling) a rear input, they will pump the front to the back as well

My old eyes aren't what they used to be, but from the picture you sent it looks like you have selected 5.1 sound. (Used when you have 4 satellites, a center channel, and a subwoofer).

You say you actually have 4.1 sound, which mean 4 satellites and a subwoofer (no center channel). Is that correct?

Correct, but there is no 4.1 Option.. or there is a 4 satellite one, but no subwoofer, which I have.

I used to have a Black Cable originally with my Speakers, but now I can't find it. I had to use a different cable, I have no idea if it is the same type or not, but it plugged in correctly.
  • TemplarTemplar You first.

    Absolutly no clue...

Either way, I have no sound anymore, I can't figure it out! Driving me nutz, god damned Abit boards always giving me **** when I first buy them. The only reason I continue is becuase they don't give me issues after the first couple days.

The sound was working one moment, then all of a sudden it stops, I cannot find the program either, and when I open the windows setting for sound, it is all greyed out and I cannot select or change crap. WTF?

OK, figured out the NO SOUND issue, appearently I forgot to put my AGP/PCI to FIXED and so it was OC'd too much ;)

Works now, but I still don't have surround sound.

I'm having a similar problem with a Logitech Z-560 4.1 surround system and an MSI KT6 Delta-LSR running the C-media 9739A codec. I've always had problems getting my 4.1 to work. It always seems to play for the front channels and not the rear ones when I do surround tests. If I turn the M3D option on, I get the right and left front speaker sounds in all four of them. Sounds like we're suffering from the same symptoms.

I've tried all the different speaker configs listed in Windows in conjunction with all the different speaker configs listed in my drivers. Doesn't seem to do any good, even when I plug the bastard into the Line-In after it supposedly turns to a rear out. *sigh*

If you find a fix, please let me know. I haven't been digging much, but that's only because I haven't had a computer in operating condition for the last week and a half.

You can check to see what channels are outputting to help find where the problem is. Hook up one cable (unplug the other completely) to the rear output on the mobo, and connect it to the front input on the speakers. Run the audio test, and see if there is any sound in any speakers. Then try the same with a different cable...basically try all the possibilities.

I know you don't have a Creative card (lucky you...:D ), but every time I let MS update my SB Live! driver (via Windows Update) I lose my rear channels.

Then it's uninstall, clean the registry, reinstall old SB drivers, and swear never to do it again...

Maybe you have something similar going on. Have you tried a different driver? :)

I only use MSI's own drivers. I try to avoid anything that comes from Microsoft. Only reason I use Windows is because I don't feel like figuring out what programs I like and don't like all over again.
