Overclocking a 4400+

I just finished reading Croc's posts on overclocking his X2 3800+, Good stuff man. I am eyeing a X2 4400 myself, but have myself a question about it. I was going to get the 4800, but I wonder if I can just overclock the 4400 to 2.4 and have it be just like the 4800. You guys here are the top dogs with all the answers, so I come to you for advice. Can I save $200 by doing what I say? Or am I just a FOOL! I have only overclocked one P4 3.0ghz to 3.2ghz before and I dont think that was done right as the board had few options (and I didnt know what I was doing). Also, If I decide to try and overclock the X2 4400 will you guys provide helpful advice? I appreciate any help you guys have to offer. My CPU will be in your hands.

    Hi Liquid,

    Even poor 4400+ chips will have little difficulty reaching the 2.4GHz clock of the 4800+. You may not even need a vcore boost to get there. Considering that the 4800+ is about 70% more expensive than the 4400+ for only a 200MHz boost, it makes perfect sense to look at the 4400+.. definitely not a fool.. very smart man :D

    Check out my A64 overclocking guide, it should help you reach your goal of 2.4GHz (and probably exceed it): http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=300

    Start a thread when you get started, I'd love to see the results.

    Liquid81 I have a Opteron 165 and a X2 4400+ both running at 2.5ghz both using AMD's stock heatpipe heatsink. OCing a DualCore Athlon64 Is a no brainer!
    HTT 278 (9x) 2502mhz
    Mem 166mhz (5:6 ratio => CPU/11 Divisor)

    Hey Liquid81

    I am running a 4400+ at 2.46 GHz with easy on the Stock HSF! I also run a 4800+ and do see a beneficial increase but not to the point that would make me buy the 4800+again! Get the 4400+ and OC the little bastard! :)

    Cool, thanks guys. I will be using a custom water cooling setup. What type of speed you think I can hit with that? Also, is Gskill crap? I think in my last overclocking ventures my ram held me back. So what would you reccomend for my situation?

    If you have a water cooled soultion I would say you could tap in the 2.8 area! but that depends on your Mobo. Ram PSU etc...

    Instead of trying to re-explain it all check out Lemonlimes comprehensive A64 OC'ing guidelines :)

    I will reply later with a detailed list of my system. Its pretty decent I think. But for now I better get back to work before they fire my a$$.

    Here is the junk I am putting into my new workstation.

    Hiper Modular Type-R 580W Power Supply
    AMD Athlon X2 4400+ (my first AMD)
    CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400- Model #: TWINX2048-3200C2PRO ( want this, but wish it was cheaper)
    ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939
    2x BFG 7800gtx (in Sli of course)
    2x Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache
    4x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L300S0 300GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
    Custom Water cooling setup

    I need only to get my CPU and ram. I would like to get cheaper ram though cuz I am running out of money and my GF is pregnant and she is mad I am spending it on myself instead of the baby (which is 6 months away).

    Tell me what you guys think of all this craziness and if I am on the path to a successful OC'ed rig.

    That is the PSU im hunting down! I love the connect feature! "hey if you can't get the ram you need I might have some that woudl work for you :)"

    setup looks good!

    I got mine PSU from Frozen CPU.com. I had it preordered before they were released like 5 months ago. I also like the connections. What is the type O ram you gots bro?

    you probably could save some cash and get a 1900XT instead of two 7800GTX's. The whole SLI thing isn't really worth it because by the time you have two of those cards, ATI and Nvidia will have a brand new card that is cheaper than those two (ATI already does) and faster in a single card.

    is Opteron better than X2? Cant see many differences besides the clock speed and some cache differences.

    Opterons are a higher bin (Better Temps/Power usage) and an X2 of equal speed and cache.

    does that mean its the same but better? I am a dumbass when it comes to this stuff.

    Yes on the first part. No, you just are not familiar with AMD's but quickly learning on the second part. :cool2:

    ok, so should I get an opteron 175 instead of a X2 4400? It is a little more expensive, but can I overclock it more? The L1 cache is slightly lower, whats that all about? what can I do with 128k that I cant do with 64k? I have a whole bag of questions. Tell me to shut up when I exceed my asking limit.

    Just get the 170 instead of the 175. They both OC the same. It is like the 4400 to the 4800 all over again. So the 175 is just money you don't need to spend. The smaller L1 won't hurt a bit. My 170 runs much better than my X2 ever did. It is sooooo much smoother and I don't get the switching glitches I did with the X2.

    The L1 isn't smaller 64K (Data) + 64K (Instr) = 128K total

    All Athlon 64s, X2s, Opterons and Semprons have 128K L1 Cache (Data + Instr) per core

    My 4400+ @ 2.5ghz

    You are mistaken.

    Post #20 shows a CPU-Z shot of my X2 4400+ (Dual Core 2.2ghz 1MB/1MB) It distinctly shows L1 Data 64K & L1 Code 64K (Total 128K) Just as my Opteron 165 in Post #4 does.

    Opteron165 (DC 1.8ghz 1MB/1MB)................................Athlon X2 4400+ (DC 2.2ghz 1MB/1MB)

    I have the 4400+. After reading some instruction on short media I decided to OC. Here is where I am at now. What do you think I should change? Should I lower the multiplier and raise the Freguency.

    REF CLK=230
    Multiplier=11
    Mem= 180 at 5/6
    CLK SPD=2530
    HTT=1840
    Vcore=Default
    Max Temp=40C
    Ran Prime95 for 6.5 hours. No errors, no faults.

    Does all this really effect the performance much?
    I am new at OCing so pardon my lack of knowledge.:scratch:

    Hello guys ive just ordered my new system and am new to the overclocking front.

    The specs are

    Thermaletake Armor VA8000BWS Case
    560W Silverstone ST56F Strider
    Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3500LL Pro TwinX
    Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe nForce4 SLi X16
    2 x XFX GeForce 7900 GT Extreme Edition 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ With Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower Cooling

    Anyone let me know the best clockings? from what ive heard 2.6 on the core and 600mhz on each gpu sounds nice but can i achieve this with just fan cooling on the cards?

    Thanks alot,

    Rob
