Blu-ray Pricing Revealed

Sony will be pricing Blu-ray titles at $23.95 each for new releases, according to a report by Ars Technica.
Not every retailer will get the privilege of selling Blu-ray movies at first, razor thin margins or not. Feingold said that Sony Pictures is going to limit distribution at first to retailers who also sell Blu-ray hardware—a move that will no doubt anger boutique retailers, and retailers who have set their phasers on stun when it comes to clearing shelf space for a new round of hardware products.

"Our intent is to create a critical mass of movies and displays at retail that will showcase the escalating availability and abundance of both software and hardware in the marketplace," Feingold said. "There is no point in putting software into outlets that don’t carry the hardware in the beginning."

The retailers will probably hook the kiosk players up to nasty old TVs like they always do. Always a winning sales strategy: showcase the capabilities of the next generation by hitching it up to the last one.
