embedded windows media player error

Folks,

I am having difficulty with playing streaming video through the embedded winsow media player in IE 6.0+. I Keep getting one of those "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and mus close....da....da....da" error messages and the details are as follows:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: wininet.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2781
Offset: 00078bac

I have looked on the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Hoping someone here might be able to help me out. I have done full system sweeps with Ad-Aware and Spy-bot, as well as with a Rogers (local ISP) Antivirus and Anti-spy scans and could post a Hijack This log if requested. Has anyone out there encountered this problem, or better yet can someone help me?

THANKS, Jason

I should have mentinoed that I am running Win XP, SP2. I did however try what you suggested (and what Microsoft suggested from the link you provided), but I can't access the command prompt only (I think this has something to do with XP no longer incorporating DOS??), I just endup getting to safe mode. Thanks though, I still await a possible resolution to this problem. One thing I read in another forum was something about using IEradicator to completely remove IE and then reinstall IE 6.0+; have you used this program before profdlp?

With XP, you use F8 to get to the boot menu that lets you choose Command Prompt (or Console)Only. There ARE some DOS legacy things left in the Command Console, btw: cd still changes directory, md still makes one, etc.

I had tried that, but it goes through safe mode and command prompt only, so I actually logged in this time and it brought me to the command rpompt (DOS window). Problem now is that when I try to type in a short hand key they are all different than what I have on my key board and I can't get the ' ~ ', which I need. Arrrrgh.... It seems as though when I get into the command prompt window the language of my keyboard changes, at tleast that is the only thing I can figure out, yet in windows it is fine. Still trying...

Also, I am not convinced that the Microsoft solution is the way to go anyway, as it says it is for Windows 95, 98 and 2000 only!
