Plextor is due to release their new generation DVD burners that can record at speeds of 18x. The drive is capable of burning 18x speeds on 16x certified DVD-R and DVD+R media and obtains 10x speeds on supported DVD+R dual layer media and 6x record speeds on DVD-R dual layer media.
The drive features a 2MB buffer and Plextor's PowerRec technology. PowerRec dynamically adjusts the laser intensity and burn speed to correct impurities in the recordable media.

Well I thought the $119 price tag they mentioned in the news article seemed a bit steep for a burner, but then I'm clueless as to what a decent burner goes for in the US. Seems this one should give a saving of around $580.00 :)

That's about double what a good burner would cost and triple what you'd pay for a bargain model.

I just replaced my dead Plextor with a Liteon. Bad purchase, the Plextor was great, took a very short time from putting the CD in till when it reads it, same as if I try to access it after a while of not using it. The Liteon takes AGES and in considerably louder too :( .
