XP wont recognize any of my media, can someone help?

edited March 2006 in Science & Tech
Lately my computer will not recognize anything.....cd's, dvd's, flash media, whatever. Normally on windows xp, there will be a window that comes up that asks what I would like to do, play music on which media player, play a dvd on what dvd player, download flash media to whatever file, whatever. But now, nothing. I can go into my computer and double click on the icon that goes to the portal in which my media is located, and it will go ahead and work, but I like the automatic option much better. Did I turn something off on accident, or does this sound like a hardware or software conflict? Thanks for your help.

Jim

It sounds like you've turned AutoPlay off. Go into the Management Console>>Disk Management and right-click on each drive, left-click on "Properties" and see what it says under the AutoPlay tab.

Thats what I thought too, but the auto play is on on all drives (even the numerous flash drives. One thing though, I have two printers which both have 8-in-1 drives and a 9 in 1 drive built into my computer. Of course I dont need all of these, the drives on the printers were just bonuses (slow bonuses) from HP. I was wondering if all of these drives are conflicting with eachother?

Try using Microsoft's Autoplay Repair Wizard.

Well, I tried that auto fix that you sent to me. It took care of the problem in about 15-20 seconds! It looks like it did what it was made to do. Now check this out.......When i first boot up my computer, the auto recognize will work, on any specific drive-once. After it has worked once for that drive, its done. Go to the next drive and it will work-once, and so on. IF you go back to a drive that has already tried its auto recognize, it just sits there and assumes your not looking anyway. (I think thats what its thinking) Any ideas?

I am not at my computer right now, but I would say about 9 or so.

With all of the removeable storage drives you have I was wondering if you were running short of drive letters. Nine is not a problem.

Have you tried reinstalling your chipset and USB Controller drivers?
