Run HijackThis, click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile", copy all the text and paste it in a new thread in our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum. One of our SVT Swat Team members will be along to look things over - tell 'em Prof sent you.

Hi, I seem to have a very slow start-up loading screen. I got told to do this, so here's my HiJackThis log file:

    Hi, Welcome to Short-Media :)

Theres not much showing in your log. Just a few minor things to remove.

First, can you put HJT into its own folder. Otherwise you will have backup files on your desktop :)
    =====

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway

    - Close ALL open windows
    Click Fix Checked

Reboot and let me know of any improvements :)

Thanks for the warm welcome, it's not common to get those nowadays. :)

Anyway, it seemed to quicken up the start-up load screen; however there is a prolonged black screen after that, and it takes quite some time to eventually load up (ie everything loading up after you see the desktop)

    I have a 4-month-old laptop, it's a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a Centrino 1.73Ghz processor, 1034MB RAM, 80Gb HD, ATI MOBILITY Radeon X300 128mb graphics. Just if that helps atall. :)

Thanks for all the help you are giving me by the way, I think it's great having a forum like this as it saves some expensive hassle.

    Cam.

I'm seriously guessing that Norton could be the reason for a long startup. Could we try disabling it temporarly and see if there are any improvements?

    To do that:
    • Go to Start > Run > Type msconfig
    • Click the Startup Tab
    • Uncheck all references to Norton.
    • Click Apply and then Close
    • Reboot when prompted

If there is an improvement, then we can assume its Norton. If things are still the same, then we can try other things :)

Let me know how it goes :)

Ok this is slightly disconcerning; I can only see one thing that I think might be Norton:

    c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccApp.exe

Is that what you were talking about?

Don't be discouraged. Disable that file...

Ok, sorry I was so long, but here are my results (using my trusty mobile phone stopwatch ;))

    When I disabled Norton:

    20 sec...Loading Screen
    further 43 sec...Black Screen
further 1 min 30 sec..."Windows is starting up" & Welcome screen (stopped clockwatch when sound of windows occured)
further 1 min 30 secs... until everything was loaded and I could open programs etc.

    When Norton is abled:

    20 sec...Loading Screen
    further 46 sec...black screen
further 1 min 12 sec... "Windows is starting up" & welcome screen (stopped clockwatch when sound of windows occured)
further 2 mins...everthing loaded and ready to open programs etc.

Hope this was useful and sorry again for the wait,
    Thanks,
    Cameron.

Thanks for that. It doesn't seem to be Norton.

Lets do some scans to see whats found:

You may want to print these instructions out!

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
Once installed, update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1) Restart your computer
    2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido
(Do not use the computer while Ewido is scanning)
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

    Hi,

OK that took quite some time to scan. From what I saw it resolved 1 adware problem, but nothing else; and my pc has still got the same symptoms.

Here's the report from the scan:

    ewido anti-malware - Scan report

    + Created on: 22:34:01, 18/02/2006
    + Report-Checksum: E64E63AA

    + Scan result:

    ::Report End

Wow! Your computer must be clean if Ewido only found one problem :)

Could you run this online scan and see if anything is found:

    Panda ActiveScan
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

    - Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report here

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    OK, thanks,

While that's running, I just wanted to clear something up.
You said in one of your earlier posts:
"First, can you put HJT into its own folder. Otherwise you will have backup files on your desktop"

I didn't know what you meant and I haven't done it.:( Is this a bad thing?

Its not a bad thing. What I mean is, that you have HijackThis.exe (HJT) on your desktop. When you *Fix* items with HJT, it creates backup files from where HJT is located. In your case, HJT is on the desktop, so backups would be placed there. Its best to put HJT into its own folder, so backups have a place to sit.

Put Silent Runners into own folder and try run it again. Hopefully, the file should be inside the folder.

That is clean aswell, however Silent Runners is showing some files not to be found and those are:

C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\shellhook.dll << could you Uninstall Ewido for the time being please.

SsiEfr.exe << Can you do a search for this and tell me which folder its in

Do you know anything about this file:

    C:\Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/TuneUp Software/Common/base.css

If not, then do a scan here and post the results.
