I am an idiot.
Hello all,
1. I am running a pirated version of XP that is 2/3 years old (thus I have not been able to apply any upgrades/patches).
2. I have occasionally been on sites that have been known to infect users systems...
3. I have relied on freeware and my cable modem to protect my system.
That being said...
A few days ago I got a pop-up message that my windows platform was unstable and to re-install for best performance. I 'x'ed out and that is where the trouble began. At this point when I log on I get the Windows xp log-on page, but...
1. I get a Avsynmgr.exe - Application Error pop-up. The error message contains the following
'The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
It seems that clicking either does nothing????
2. When I select any user from the Windows xp log-on page I get the correct desktop view with no icons. Second, left or right clicking of the mouse does nothing. The only functionality I can get is ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the Windows Task Manager.
a. On the task manager Applications tab there is no activity present
b. On the task manager processes tab there are 20 or so programs running with the CPU usage jumping between svchost.exe, taskmgr.exe and System Idle Process
c. On the task manager Performance tab I am seeing a peak and valley pattern between 3-5% usage to 99-100% usage (with a 43% usage thrown in every once in a while.
3. I have another PC (Dell) that is fine as it is only used for games and school/work, but I would like to fix the first if at all possible. The Dell came loaded with Windows xp and I think I have an emergency xp disc from it. If there is someway to re-install xp from the good/bought and paid for disc, great.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Dave
