OS Choice with AMD Athlon 64 X2

edited February 2006 in Hardware
My other post asks about whether or not certain hardware is compatible.

What I would like to know now is whether or not (or can I) run 32-bit or 64-bit editions of windows on the Athlon 64 X2.

Also, which OS would be better if I had the choice of two. I know the 64-bit edition requires 64-bit applications so I'm not sure whether that would be a good idea.

EDIT: Also (a bit off topic), in dual core cpu's, is the marked speed (in Ghz) the total for both cores or each core?

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition does not require 64-bit applications. It can run 32-bit applications without any issues, but it can also run native 64-bit applications (regular XP cannot do this). The "GHz" rating will be for each core, for instance if it says 2.2GHz it means each core runs at 2.2GHz.

As for a recommendation, I run Windows XP Professional x64 Edition with no problems. I've experienced minor driver issues when some hardware doesn't have 64-bit drivers (e.g. my car GPS system) but everything else works fine. If you have any old hardware, you should check beforehand if it has 64-bit drivers. If you do your research and know all your hardware has 64-bit drivers then I'd recommend using Windows XP x64.
