Did the harddrive come with any drivers you need to install? also, when thats the case and youve installed the driver, make sure you keep the HD on 1 usb port, dont switch between them. If you do, you have to reinstall the driver etc, for that usb drive again.

Are you up to SP2 in XP? It could be a drive size issue or a USB controller driver issue which would be taken care of with the latest XP service packs.

also try it on a different computer if at all possible
if internal check the jumpers for correct postion, if it is correct, try Cable select
OS?
