I have written several POS systems but they were not geared specificaly for restaurants. Depends on how big the restaurant is. Some just cash you out. Some have touch screens and stuff and order back to the kitchen from the front and track food supplies used and reorder for you and all kinds of crap.

Go to some restaurants localy of similiar size and see what they are using is what I would recomend.

What we want is something like mcdonalds system. (we work there  )

were you puch in the food, but I guess in this case we will have a touch screen. when its punched in it will go to the kitchen to another screen or a receip. then they will pay right there after the order.

the computer storees everyhing that was ordered. Can you make it able to be modified? like delete the orders??

If I wrote it then yes I could make it do anything in the world. Including call your house and start up the hot tub when you close down. (grin). Thats why its called custom software.

But if this is one restaurant and its small you need off the shelf software as its MUCH MUCH cheaper. You can get a system for the price of talking to me for a couple days. there is tons of this stuff out there ready to go right now.

I have been writing big custom software/accounting packages since 1981. But thats expensive, and why I said he couldnt afford me. He couldnt afford custom software at all. You don't whoop stuff like this out in a week or two. It takes months with a team of programmers. The design could take months. I'm an analyst, project manager now running teams of programmers that do this sort of thing. I used to also usually be lead programmer but I usually just design and run the project in a managerial role any more. I also work with tuning and troubleshooting Oracle systems, especially the disk subsystems.

No he needs to get a CHEAP inexpensive off the shelf package. I'm sorry if thats not what my post conveyed. He can buy a complete package for less then what consulting firms charge for a day with me onsite.

Were actually going to ask for compensation in pricing for the POS software we just went to. Basically, we have found and resolved more issues then the developer has (Menusoft) in the last 6 months of having the software. Custom POS is nice, but can be a real pain in the ass if you don't have some programming knowledge to figure out what profit center sales are being placed into, tax tables, and the problems that go along with user error and the 10000000000 other things that go wrong or arn't customized the exact way you need them.

So we will get a touchscreen, that works with any ordinary PC?? I guess I will build the pc.

    http://www.prismpos.com ;)

PAR POS seems to be a widely used software front end. LMK if you have any further questions regarding the ins/outs of it. QSR/FSR support, multiple soft/hardware configs, BOPC accountability, etc.

My dad's been looking at something like this for his 30 room hotel. Do you guys know any specialized for hotels? I found a few when I was first searching a few months ago, but they all charged around $2000-$5000 and that's a bit much. If this came with support and a website where we could take online reservations, it would be worth it, but it comes with the software box and that's it. Thanks.

does anyone know what type of connect the cash drawer is? Im trying to find out where everything plugs so I can look at different options.

Depends on the kit you buy, most of the cash drawers I've seen were triggered by the printer.
