Data Center Move

I'm not sure if this would be the correct forum to put this in, if not I may be SOL... but any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I work for a "medium sized business". We really don't have a veteran IT figure head that would take care of everything, but our dept manages to support our users.

Our corporate office has moved, however, our dept (IT) and the company's datacenter manages to remain in separate location from about 99% of the users. Thus the preparation of the Data Center move.

Without getting too detailed, we probably house at least 10-13 production servers ranging from: DCs, SQL Server, Web, Exhange, etc... and more importantly, our cisco VoIP systems, VPN, & networking hardware.

Im almost too overwhelmed to start to think about... If anyone has any experience in Data Center moves, or could recommend a company, I'd really appreciate it. BTW were located in CA, USA.

one of sarcnet industries' primary business sectors in the last two years has been datacenter migrations. We do this for a living. I'll meet you online.

Having just done this myself, I can tell you the key is planning. Lots of planning. If you haven't done this kinda of move before, then get a professional in to do it.

Moving kit from one to another is more than just unplugging and moving.. consider power, heat, ventilation, cabinet space, geographic dispersion (yes.. even in a single datacenter.. don't put all your DC's in one cab if you have the option of more than one), UPS.

Look at everything you provide to the business as a service. Know exactly what services are moving. What else do they rely on? IP addressing & DNS resolution.

Id recommend Sarcnet/Brian as he has done this kind of work for a while now and his advice saved my ass with a SQL box which didn't want to play ball :)

We did our data center move about 2 months ago... Overall, it was fairly cut and dry except AT&T/SBC couldn't get their  together for the life of them..

Our IT team pulled an over nighter and a couple of us worked a near 20 hr shift coordinating the network, calming down pissed off co-workers, and screaming at ATT reps...

but other than ATT it went pretty well.. the machines didn't die on us.. and although the room isn't state of the art, it is sufficient for what are industry does... 1 rack for Cisco, rest for windows and such. Its missing a couple boxes since the pictures were taken 2 months ago... We have backup system that just got back from RMA which we absolutely hate.. don't want to mention the company's name for fear of libel suit.. lol..
