Someone explain backplanes to me.

More specifically SATA backplanes. I'm looking at this enclosure: Linky and it seems in my mind that this allows you to connect 4 SATA drives to one port on your controller.... is that right or have I got the wrong end of the stick? If it's right it could save me a lot of cash, I could just buy one of these and a 2 port SATA controller and instantly solve my storage woes.

    I have never used a sata backplane but would think they work like a scsi one. Yes you slap multiple drives into a backplane and they connect to one port on the controller.
