Intel is set to get back on track in the CPU market - the chipmaker is set to showcase its new line of chips later this week at the developers' forum in San Francisco.
AMD, once content to mimic Intel's advances, has set the technological pace in recent years with innovations such as putting two processing cores in a single chip -- moves that have helped it gobble market share from its much-larger rival.

"Multicore gives us the ability to get back on traditional performance growth lines," Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner told reporters on Monday. "We have become fanatical about energy efficiency. We have to continue to make progress in terms of energy efficiency."

Analysts expect Intel to focus chiefly on chips for the server computers that run corporate networks. Highlighting the importance of that segment, the event's main speech will be given by Pat Gelsinger, head of Intel's enterprise business.

"My expectation is that Intel's new products are definitely going to narrow the gap with AMD, and in some cases may even close the gap," said Nathan Brookwood, head of semiconductor consultancy Insight64.
Details for Intel's CPU roadmap can be found in this newspost.

Ugh...the only good news that comes out of this is that AMD is probably going to be raising their prices more now. Wait...!

I don't see how AMD can afford to raise their prices now that Intel is actually going to be competitive on a performance basis.

In that article they mention one thing that will cause a frenzy not seen since dual core was announced: Quad Core. If AMD is going to be ready to roll out a quad core chip by next year (According to that article) then expect it to maintain its grasp of the market. I don't want to sound like an Intel hater. I have both an AMD and an Intel machine at the house. I just think intel is gonna have to set the world aflame to get back what they lost to AMD.

I have a feeling that AMD is going to end up like Intel was and gouge the crap out of their chips in the forseeable future. In the end, everything revolves around money in business.

and thats when i go back to intel.

I wont pay a lot for a chip, dont care how fast it is. im quite content with my a64 2800@2Ghz. it isnt the fastest by any means or even dual core, but it is plenty fast for me. id take a faster chip, but its all what you can afford.
