Help with Vcodec

Hi,

Spybot reports that I have Vcodec on my system, and I can't seem to remove it. Can someone help me remove Vcodec, and anything else that might be there, from my system.

Here is my HJT log.

Help on this site isn't very fast.

I have done the following

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe

Place a shortcut to the following online Active Virus Scans on my desktop.
www.housecall.trendmicro.com
www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp
www.commandondemand.com
www.security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
www.us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9913

Downloaded the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Read Ewido Setup Instructions
Installed it, and updated the definitions to the newest files.
Did NOT run a scan yet.

I installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, followed download and setup instructions, and check for updates:
Didn't run it yet!

Rebooted my computer in SafeMode.
pressed F8.
Ran Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double clicked the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Followed the prompts on screen.
Waited for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Opened Ad-aware and did a full scan. Removed all it found.

Ran Ewido:
(Do not use the computer while Ewido is scanning as it may interrupt the scan)
• Clicked on scanner
• Clicked Complete System Scan to begin scan.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• Steppped through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• select none for now any entry I found that I was unsure of.
Closed Ewido

Went to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Rebooted back into Windows and clicked each shortcut and ran each online virus scan one at a time.

Now that my PC is cleaned I dud the following easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secured my Internet Explorer by going to the following website and following the instructions there.
http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm

Installed a firewall to help prevent my PC's control being usurped by undesireables.

Installed and keeping updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
I am going to run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Installed and will keep SpywareBlaster 3.4 updated.

Installed an anti-virus program. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often. You can obtain Norton Antivirus SE (Free) and Ad-Aware SE from the Google Pack from www.pack.google.com. Don't install the complete Google Pack because it will eat your System resources.

I installed Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta from Microsoft.com

I will now regularly check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

I cleared my Temp folders.
I cleared out my Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select show hidden files/folders. in My Computer/ Tools/ Folder Options/ View/ select "Show hidden files and folders"

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Done and it removed everything.

The people that help in the SVT forum are volunteers and DO NOT get paid. The SVT mods would have gotton to you when they are free.

Great you got your problem sorted. If you would like me to look at a new HJT log, I will do. Just post a new one.

Thanks and welcome to Short-Media :)

If you have AOL and McAfee running both Firewall and Anti-Virus together, than that is not a good idea. Two or more of each can conflict, causing more problems. Disable or uninstall one of them.

Do you use any of these?

Netzip
Real Download
Netscape Smart Download

Trogan,

I'm using AOL Safety & Security Center which is actually a shell overlay to Mcafee Antivirus and Mcafe Personal Firewall. and also another program that is a spyware trojan program.

I have Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1, and I only just found out about Beta 2 which has been renamed to "Windows Defender" and runs as a service instead of an app. It turns out the Giant the company who created the AntiSpyware product which Microsoft has been giving away was written in Visual Basic. They reengineered the program from scratch in C so that they could make major improvements to it such as running as a service and not taking up so many resources, and also so it can be run on 64bit Windows OSs

I don't use NetZip, I use WinZip

I have used Real Download, however now that I have DSL I don't use it. Are there any problems with it? Should it be removed?

Don't use Netscape Smart download.

Rob

Thanks for telling me about AOL. I am currently using Windows Defender aswell :)

The reason I asked about those programs was because of this entry in HJT:

O2 - BHO: BrowserHelper Class - {EBCDDA60-2A68-11D3-8A43-0060083CFB9C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nzdd.dll

According to CastleCops, the file is open to debate, indicated by the O in status.

I will leave it for you to decide what you want to do. I would like for that file to be scanned by doing this:
• Please go to Jotti's malware scan
• Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:
• C:\WINDOWS\system32\nzdd.dll
• Click on the submit button
Could you post the results here along with a new HJT log please :)

I went and looked at the properties of the file and it's part of RealDownload 4 which I have on the computer. It's ashame that you can't get that program anymore. Atleast not that I am aware of. I kept a copy of the install and I at one point downloaded a key generator that generates a key that you enter in to make the advertisement page go away.

Any way here is the HJT log

Let me know if there is anything else.

Your log is clean. :)

The only problem with the file is that it will watch what you do and report it back to the programs source; more info here. Its you choice you would like to do.

You can post the laptops HJT log :)
