Lost IP address
I'm having a bit of a nightmare, I've read through the posts on the forum about other people with lost IP address but can't quite understand them. I bought a windows laptop XP. I also have a Mac. I have cable internet. I attached the mac and PC to the internet via a netgear switch (attached to modem). The mac works fine, the PC sees the connection but says there's little or no connectivity. When investigating a bit more something comes up about being unable to find IP address. I don't know how this could have happened as I only just bought the PC. It was put onto the internet at a friends house when I bought it briefly to update norton security etc. I've tried connecting it all different ways but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any advice for me, I'm quite worried and I'm a bit of a novice at fixing things!!!

You'll need to use a broadband router to share the cable connection. They're anywhere from $30 - $100 retail. If you need help picking one out, simply ask and people will chime in with their favorites.
Thanks very much for your help. Does my apple need to have bluetooth to use a router? I don't think mine does. I know my PC does so I guess that should work. I just went to dixons (equipment shop) but they didn't sell any routers which were for cable and both mac and PC compatible, then they said I'd need to buy something to make my mac bluetooth. Any ideas? I'm looking on the internet but if I could just check with you that I am lokoing for the right things? That would be very helpful.....
Wireless ethernet mac and PC compatible router and a bluetooth adapter for my mac?
Thanks again
Jen.
(Connect the PC and mac to the cable internet?)

A router is not going to be dependent on any software/hardware platform. Its main job is to take one IP Address (the one the cable modem gives you) and use Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide you with multiple IP addresses. Since your new computer is a laptop it probably has some sort of wireless connection capability built in. This is quite nice since it will allow you to gain access to the Internet anywhere in your home (and perhaps even out in the yard). What model and brand is the laptop?
I own the Linksys WRT54GS (wireless and wired) and it's highly recommended. There are cheaper solutions (without wireless) such as Netgear or D-Link. All these can be found at a local computer store such as BestBuy, CompUSA, Circuit City, etc. If your laptop has wireless, it's a nice feature to have on your router, however.
Easily share your cable or DSL modem's connection to the Internet with all your connected computers.
Price: £39.95
The Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router (the Router) lets you easily share your cable or DSL modem's connection to the Internet with all your connected computers. Along with the convenience of networking, you'll enjoy the advantages of broadband Internet access without the expense of additional service connections and extra modems. The Router provides top-level security to your network with a NAT firewall that locks out would-be hackers, and you'll also be able to restrict access on any or all of the computers on the network. Using VPN (Virtual Private Networking), the Router can be configured to allow remote access to the network by authorized users.
Advantages
• Shares your single, broadband Internet account with up to 4 computers
• Offers accelerated multiplayer gaming
• Supports PPTP, PPPoE, IPSec pass through protocols and DHCP (client and server)
• Uses the built-in switch to share files and peripherals
• Provides dedicated bandwidth to each computer in your network, enabling error-free data transmission
• Protects your computer and network against unauthorized access with NAT firewall
• Logs attempted intrusions into your network
• Lets you access your network from remote locations with VPN
• Adds more computers to your network through the uplink port
• Works with Macs and PCs
• Also supports computers running Linux or Unix OS
• Configures easily via your web browser or Easy Install Wizard
• Belkin Life-time warranty and free technical support
• Stackable enclosure and verticle stand minimizes device footprint
• Apple Rendezvous compatible for simplified networking
System requirements
• Any computer with an Ethernet port
Sound ok?
I have a cheap Advent laptop, it can be wireless but i just want the cheapest option really for now.
Thanks
Jenny.
Thanks very much for your help, that's brilliant. I like the sound of having wired and wireless too but checked the one you have and it says that it's not for mac in uk stores?

Your Mac will work with it (you may need a wireless card from Apple if you want to use wireless, but wired is fine if it's a stationary PC). Just make sure your Advent laptop has wireless (or can be upgraded).
