Laptop keys inoperative (sum)

edited March 2006 in Hardware
I have a NEC versa note vx laptop and are having some issues with the key board.

I have completely removed the operating system from the hard drive so now only working in dos to try and resolve the problem.

Keys which dont work:
Shift
6
y

I have plugged an external keyboard and all is ok.

Could it be a problem with the mainboard? I have made sure the ribbon on the board is plugged in correctly.

Sounds like you need a new keyboard. You can probably only order it from the manufacturer.

better yet, you can clean the contacts of the ribbon cable of the keyboard using a pencil eraser.

take off the screws for the keyboard, and there should be some sort of little latches that hold it in usually at the top of the keyboard. flip those down and the keyboard should come off, then theres a ribbon cable in a small connector, if you lift up on the connector the ribbon pull out, and you can clean the little contacts with a pencil earaser
