A little upgrade

edited March 2006 in Hardware
My friends birthday is coming up and im looking to upgrading his computer a little so he can play his games better and play clan matches without lagging out in the middle. He doesn't play any extreme games so a small upgrade should do.

I pretty much want to get rid of everything except his cd-rom, floppy, and his case and power supply if possible. His current processor is a 1.24 ghz amd processor that I can't identify.

I was thinking maybe a 2800+ sempron with a biostar mobo? 512 or 1gb of cheap and decent ram. Some sort of graphics card if there is money left.

My budget is somewhere above or below $300.

Any ideas would be appreciated and ill be aroundto answer any questions needed. thanks

    What a friend! I wish my friends bought me PC hardware

    I'm guessing he has an AMD Thunderbird based on that clock speed. He could also be using PC133 SDRAM as well, which means you'll probably not be able to reuse much of his hardware.

    Ideally, if you want to improve his gaming experience, the graphics card will make the biggest difference, so concentrate your efforts there. Look around for something like a 6600GT, or an X800 based card. These are clearing out all over the place, and are priced very well. Best bang for the buck IMO. Do you happen to know what card he's using now so that we can have a reference point?

    Sempron 3100+ = $85.00 (Newegg)
    ASUS K8V-X 754 = $51.00 (Newegg)
    512MB OCZ Value PC3200 = $38.00 (Newegg)
    EVGA 6600GT = $139.00 (Newegg)

    Total = 313.00 which is not too bad, and should provide a pretty nice gaming rig. 1GB of ram would be better if u don't mind springing an extra $38.

    Hopefully his PSU will be up to the task. Do you have any more info on his current hardware?

    Thanks for replying!

    His current hardware is the 1.24ghz amd processor, 256mb pc2100, codegen 350w psu, and a bcs elitegroup(?) motherboard.

    I was wondering about this gpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127176

    With the rebate it seems like a pretty fair price?

    Note, he has been playing his games on this rig for the past 4 years(lagging all the while).

    Yep, that should be a great card for the price. Its the vanilla flavor of X800, but it should be similar performing (maybe a tad better) than the 6600GT. I'm not sure if his power supply is going to be up to the task, but you may want to 'recommend' that he buy a name brand Antec/OCZ/Enermax psu after he gets the new gear :)

    I've had a few 250 watt and 300 watt Codegen psu's and they were marginal in buildt quality and power for their size. IMO, you will need to buy a new psu too, but you can try it with his present one for now.

    Also for around $28 more, you can get a 1 GB stick of GSkill PC3200 Value and he can have a gig of ram.

    psu = good budget psu, will be stable with minor overclocking
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817104952

    cpu = i would get this sempron and just overclock it...saves a few bucks. all you want is the 256k l2 cache. a 400- 600mhz overclock should be no problem.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819104251

    gpu = it's better than the x800 you posted....cheaper but similar specs. (128mb, 256bit)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814102691

    mobo = it looks like a clown but it performs well. ignore the psuedo-agp slot.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813153036

    ram = i think this was posted earlier. 1gb--cheap but decent.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231030

    total = $332 + shipping

    I was wondering if anyone knew about tis power supply?
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023

    Its pretty cheap and it got good reviews so I was considering it. Wondered if anyone else had any other alternatives.

    well it is ok, however the fsp (fortron source) i posted earlier is better for a few bucks less. it might not look as sexy, but it is much better. look at the specs of each. the fsp has dual 12v rails which is nice. plus fsp is a quality brand right up there with antec, enermax, etc... i have used 3 fsp psus in the past with no problems.

    fsp
    3.3v = 30a
    5v = 30a
    12v = 18a
    12v(2) = 18a

    thermaltake
    3.3v = 20a
    5v = 30a
    12v = 18a
