Download and run the latest version of CPU-Z from www.cpuid.com. Once you run the program, go to the Memory tab, and post what is displayed there. Also, go to the SPD tab, and check each 'slot' and let us know how many slots have memory in them.
open the side of your case and remove the stick or sticks that look just like it and put these in. Power up and you just gained 4x the memory you had. Your system will be snapier and aps will open faster.

I'm going to guess that this machine is an OEM box from DEll, HP or Compaq. If so it may be adviseable to see what memory is compatable. I also see by post #4 that it likely has onboard graphics that shares some of the RAM since there is 256 physical and 248 installed.
