Explorer Menu Bars Edited

I have two stubborn problems I just can't seem to fix with internet explorer.

I used to use Shaw Internet and the blue menu bar at the top of the window always says: "Current Webpage" - Internet Explorer Provided by SHAW Internet. I can't get rid of the blasted thing even running the usual anti-spyware programs.

The other problem is that there is a link in Internet Explorer under the tools menu to partypoker.net. Again I've tried finding a way to remove it but the stupid thing just won't disappear.

Any advice on how to get rid of these bugs would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Hi, Welcome to Short-Media :)

    Can you post a HJT log please? If you need help with that, please ask. :)

    Here is my HJT log from the computer that has the Partypoker.net menus; I'll put the log of the other computer on later.

    To make it less complicated, lets deal with one HJT log at a time. Lets start with the PartyPoker trouble.

    Please create a new folder for HJT on your desktop and then move HJT to it. This is so backups have a place to sit.

    Next, go into Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and uninstall the following, if found:

    PartyPoker

    Reboot your computer and let me know if the PartyPoker menus are still there.
    =====

    • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
    • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:
    • C:\DOCUME~1\Steven\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdj.exe
    • Click on the submit button
    • Please post the results in your next reply.

    Hi there,

    Party poker.net or anything like it isn't located in my add/remove programs list.

    Jotti's malware scan said staus ok and all the scans found nothing.

    Cheers,

    As mentioned above, make sure that HijackThis is in its own folder. Next, do the following:

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    Click Fix Checked

    Reboot and let me know if its gone :)

    <<<Reboot and let me know if its gone :)>>>

    It's Gone! Thank you so much for the help. I was really frustrated seeing that menu bar for partypoker.net in my toolbar all the time. I have no idea how it got there in the first place.

    Now if you could recommend how to remove the annoying SHAW menu on my other computer :)

    I just want to put out a great big thanks to all you guys out there for helping people like me out. I know a little bit about computers but not enough to deal with malicious programs that edit tool bars, menus and stuff. Thank you for providing a place for assistance like this.

    Cheers,

    Your welcome! That log is now clean. :)

    Now for the other log. Same as before, put HJT into its own folder and then do the following:

    Go into Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and uninstall the following, if found:

    RXToolBar
    =====

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Internet Explorer Provided by SHAW Internet

    O3 - Toolbar: RX Toolbar - {25D8BACF-3DE2-4B48-AE22-D659B8D835B0} - C:\Program Files\RXToolBar\RXToolBar.dll (file missing)

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    Click Fix Checked
    =====

    Find and Delete the following:

    C:\Program Files\RXToolBar << this folder
    =====

    Reboot and let me know how it went. Post a new HJT log if you want :)

    Thanks once again for your help. Now both my computers are clean. HijackThis certainly is a useful tool for finding the tricky alterations and hacks that the usual anti-spyware programs miss.

    Your Welcome! :)

    HJT is a powerful tool and if you don't know what your doing, you could screw up your PC. Most of the entries are legit! :)

    Can we mark this resolved?

    Excellent! Thread is closed. If you need help again, just start a new thread :)

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

    Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. If you don't have a Firewall, then choose ONE below

    Zone Alarm
    Sygate
    Sunbelt Kerio PF

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often. If you don't have one, choose ONE from below.

    Nod32
    AVG Free Edition
    AntiVir
    avast! 4 Home Edition

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot Search & Destroy.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

    Clear your Temp folders.
    Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.
    Under the General tab click the Delete Files... button; check the Delete all offline content box and press OK. Click the Delete Cookies... button and press OK

    Also, go to Start > Find/Search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    Clear out temp files from the following location. Change "username" to whatever you have on your computer.

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    It is very important that system files and folders are hidden again, so that they DO NOT get deleted by mistake.

    Windows XP
    * Click Start.

    After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
    To flush the XP system Restore Points.

    Go to Start | Run | type msconfig | Press Enter.

    When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
    On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

    Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

    Reboot! Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

    Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
