A greeting and a website issue!

Hello!

I have a little trouble with my PC and as I searched the net for a resolution I came across this site. I've read through some posts and you guys seem to REALLY know what you're talking about.

I have to start with this: :welshflag cos I'm Welsh :)

Ok, I downloaded a file, ran it and all hell broke loose.

Firstly I started getting pop-ups (I guess I should have noted the web addresses - sorry!) every 2-3 mins.
Then an app tried to install itself - Littlewoods casino or something. I cancelled of course but I think the damage was done.

I promptly downloaded, installed, updated and scanned with Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-aware and Windows Defender. This managed to stop the popups and I was able to change my home page back to normal.

Only one problem remains. Some (but not all) websites now only show as code. There is one inparticular which is a forum site that I just finished setting up here and now when I go there it shows like this
forum.JPG

If I right click on the page I have an option to translate the page to English. When I click this it brings up a Google Translation frame and displays the site fine (although I can't log into it - the same happens).

I've deleted the cookies for this site thinking it might help but I'm still stuck.

Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened or how I can fix it? I would REALLY appreciate any thoughts on this.

BIG BIG thanks!

:welshflag

    Thanks for replying skankinred!

I tried that link and pasted the entire log file in but it didn't work. It said there were URL tags in it. I removed all I could see but it still didn't work.

I found a walk-through of what each section of the log file means and what you should get rid of. I followed it through and had hijickthis remove 5 or 6 lines.

    No change.

Someone in work then gave me another anti-spy software which i installed, updated and ran. It found more and removed them but it's still not working.

If anyone has any ideas I'm open! :)

    Thanks! :welshflag

Hi. First we need to deal with a Look2Me infection. Please follow the instructions below:

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
    • Close all windows before continuing.
    • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
    • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
    • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
    • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
    • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
    • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Your computer will then shutdown.
    • turn your computer back on.
    • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
    http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/images/lib/MSWINSCK.OCX

After we do this there are some other nasties to deal with.

    Thanks for replying!

I followed the directions. The computer rebooted....
    And now nothing.

I get the logon screen (Win XP set up for a domain). I can ctrl-alt-del, put a password in but after i hit ok nothing happens. I can get task manager up but if i start a new task - explorer, nothing happens.
I've left it for about 30 mins like this thinking it might come back eventually.

I'm now on a different PC, by the way.

I've tried last known good config and I've also tried logging on as Administrator.

    Any suggestions?

I'm pretty close to admitting defeat and doing a rebuild but with my 100GB HDD over half full I'd rather not....

Any suggestions now REALLY appreciated. :)

    Thanks!

Hmmm. That's pretty strange. Almost like the Winlogon Notify key is totally trashed. I would recommend visiting our emergency help forum here. They can walk you through a repair install of XP. It only replaces the system files so your personal stuff should stay intact. Come back here when you're finished there.

I'm an IT engineer so an XP repairI can manage :)

I'll let you know how it goes....shame I left my CD wallet in work :(

I should mention that a couple of other things are a bit screwy. I think it's to do with the repair of XP though. I'll work those out at some point......

Still got some pretty ugly things there. I think we should run Ewido Anti-Malware before we go fixing things using hijack this. Please download Ewido from my signature below and install the program. Set it up according to the following instructions:

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
    • If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
    • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
    • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Settings
      • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
      • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
      • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
      • Click OK
    • Click on Complete system scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
    • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Please select perform action with all infections.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Exit ewido

Reboot into normal mode and post the Ewido log and another Hijack This log.

    Danger Will Robinson!
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: zopenssl - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\zopenssl.dll
    ZOPENSSL.DLL which is a rootkit

Winlogon Notify's are pain in the *** to remove. Use a windows boot disk, manually navigate to the system32 directory and delete the file. You will be unable to delete even in safe mode.
