Computer Keeps Restarting - Stop error: c000021a

For some reason, today, my computer just started restarting. It was working fine all morning and then began restarting over and over. I restarted in safe mode and turned off the "Restart when error occurs" option and now I get the stop error:

c000021a - The windows logon process system process terminated 0xc0000005

Is there anything I can do to keep my computer from restarting? Or is this a REALLY bad sign?

You're not the first person to come here recently with this exact problem. Read through the first few posts in this thread.

I would recommend that you run HijackThis and post a log here. If I spot any monkeyshines I'll send this over to our Spyware/Virus/Trojan Discussion Forum experts.

Ok, I'll see if I can get a log for you, right now we're creating some recovery DVD's in safe mode. I think my situation's a little different though, I'm not exactly sure what the cause is because we ran spyware and virus checkers in safe mode and nothing came up. We toyed with the notion that someone was trying to remote access our computer from somewhere but that's just strange. Anyways, as soon as the recovery discs are done I'll get a hijackthis log =)

Edit: Also, I'm posting all of this on my own computer because we really can't get on his to do anything much more than five minutes. @_@. It always seems to restart after 5-7 minutes.

The computer is only a month old too.

I don't see anything amiss in your log. You could try disabling the Norton Internet Security stuff temporarily - I've seen lots of problems which were traced back to it.

Go into the BIOS and see if there is a section listing your temperatures, fan speeds, and voltages. If there is, post the values here.

You could also try creating a new user while you're in Safe Mode, then reboot and log onto the new account and see if the problem persists. For that matter, try booting to Safe Mode and see if the computer will keep running without spontaneously rebooting.

Ok, this is a HUGE problem. We went back to factory settings (basically started from scratch) we didn't update any drivers, and only added a few programs to the computer. Daz Studio, Maple story and that's about it. The error came back and I don't know what to do.

Norton internet security has been turned off, I don't think that's the problem.
Edit: We just made sure Norton Internet security was disabled and it still shut down with the error.

Our computer is practically brand new and this error really frightens me because we won't have enough money to buy a new one and the grace period for being able to return it ended about a week and a half ago. This is our work computer and it IS AN EMERGENCY.

CompaqConnections.exe is running in the WTM processes, which probably came with the computer, would that be part of the problem?

I REALLY don't think this is a virus or trojan as we haven't been downloading anything weird.

Have you added any new hardware or installed new software recently?

Click Start > Run > type EventVwr.msc and press OK. Click "System" and look for any recent Error problem. Double-click it and post the info here.

Ok, a little update, since I've been really desperate all day. I went to the compaq online support page and have been talking to the experts all day, but they seem pretty much as stumped as I am on what exactly the problem is.

The stop error only seems to occur when the computer is out of safe mode AND connected to our LAN through ethernet.

It works fine and gets no errors when it is in safe mode, when it is in safe mode with networking, and when it is in normal mode with the ethernet cable disconnected.

The ethernet is an onboard device so we just installed a new PCI network card and we're seeing if that fixes the problem.

Edit: Thank you trojan, however I've been through the steps on that page already and still have the problem. You wouldn't believe how many people have this same problem but different symptoms.

Double Edit: Thank you, too, prof, I'm sorry for being such a bother but y'know, everyone's got to work! @_@..

Ok, the new network card didn't help, still getting the error =(. It's a brand new computer pretty much, I looked inside yesterday and it's SPOTLESS. I was going to clean it with a vacuume to see if that helped but there's nothing in there TOO vacuume.

Edit: Ok, about to look and see if there were any errors. I checked once before but I don't believe there were any errors present, but let me recheck.
