Does anti virus and anti spyware software generally work the same?

hi,
does anti virus and anti spyware software both work the same, by scanning the computer for files and signatures that are in the virus definition database currently updated to the program?

    I would like to say yes, but that would be incorrect. If you will notice as you browse other help threads that most people are directed not to use only one but several virus and spyware removal tools as some are better at finding specific things then others
