Blank Desktop After Logging In

A friend of mine passed me a WinXP Home SP2 laptop to look at - after logging in, the desktop is completely blank, no icons, no Task Bar, nothing. Just the pretty wallpaper! Please help before I really lose the rest of my hair!!!

    1. Hit Ctrl + alt + del.
    2. Go to the applications tab
    3. Hit "New task..."
    4. Enter "Explorer.exe" into the box and hit okay.

    Then follow the instructions HERE to help us get you on your way.

    Well I'll be a monkey's uncle!!!

    Deleted Temp Internet files and cookies and rebooted - and it's all working like a champ! Unbelievable!!!

    Many thanks for that - I just wished I'd asked eight hours ago instead of ripping my hair out!
